Scott,

General Lejeune was a distinguished French-Creole from Pointe Coupee,
Louisiana - he wasn't an Acadian or a Cajun.

I have a link to General Lejeune on my Cajun-Acadian-Louisiana links page at

Thanks Stanley!

There's an the Acadian connection to this story as well.

The US Postal Service unveiled the "Distinguished Marines" stamps yesterday
at the Marine Barracks in DC (I'm the senior speechwriter for USPS, so I
wrote the speech on this one...).

One of the stamps was of Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune, born in Pointe
Coupee, LA.

Oddly enough, each of the other stamps got great hometown writeups on their
"local boy"... for example, NJ/NY papers did a bunch of stories about
Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone.

The national press ran with stories leading off with Lieutenant General
Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller (he's a Virginia native). But I haven't found a
single writeup about Cajun hero Lejeune in any of the Louisiana papers...
very sad, really. A nice chance to proclaim our cajun heritage on a
national stage.
