The following was sent to me by my son for forwarding to anyone who may be
interested. The 54th PVI was a regiment which was formed in August & September of
1861 and served through the end of the Civil War. Recruitment was primarily from
Cambria, Somerset, Westmoreland, Dauphin, Lehigh, and Northampton counties, with
additional men from areas surrounding those counties.
The monument, which replaces one lost to the ravages of time, weather, and floods,
was sponsored by the Jacob Campbell Camp, S.U.V. in Johnstown, and made by the
renowned historical sculptor Gary Casteel. (Gary's recent work includes the new
Longstreet Statue in Gettysburg.)

Dear Friends,
I am pleased finally to tell you that the 54th Pennsylvania Monument will be
dedicated on November 11, 2000 in Johnstown. The Jacob Campbell Camp,
Sons of Union Veterans invites you to participate in this celebration of dedication
and remembrance. Upon viewing the completed memorial, I am sure you will
agree that the results have justified the wait.
The festivities will start at the Old G.A.R. Hall on Center Square,
Johnstown at 1:00 P.M. After a brief Remembrance at the G.A.R., the
ceremonies will continue a few hundred yards away at the statue. A reception
will follow.
The day will conclude with Johnstown's Veterans Day Parade. On this day
dedicated to honoring veterans of all wars, the living historians of the
54th Pennsylvania Reenactment Unit will march, representing Johnstown's
Union Civil War Veterans. More speakers and ceremonies will follow the
parade.
I am also pleased to announce that several chapters of my new book about the
54th will be previewed on November 11. The book remains a work in progress
as more information continues to appear. Anyone interested in seeing these
preview chapters can e.mail me if they cannot make the ceremonies.
I shall try to e.mail each of you individually over the next several weeks.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me
