Dear Shirley,
Thank you for your prompt reply & I'm sorry I haven't been able to email you back sooner. I am just beginning to try to research an Edmonstone and I don't know if I'm in "the right church/wrong pew" so to speak however, it's an avenue to consider.
The Edmonstone I mentioned went by both George, but nickname (or perhaps middle name) of William. Notes from friends also referred to him as Andrew or Andy. Thus, the direction I think I need to look in is both of the following:
Archibald & Anna Helena Edmonstone had 4 sons & 5 daus who were
step-bros and step-sisters of Sir Robert Adair II :
1 Archibald (died young). 2 Walter ( died young). 3 William ( died young).
4 Archibald Edmonstone (young step-brother of Sir Robert Adair II) who
succeeded his father (refer “An account of the Proceedings of the Estates
in Scotland 1689-1690”, Vol. II, page 216, in the following note).
His daus were :
1 Elizabeth Edmonstone (step-sister of Sir Robert Adair II) m. James
MONTGOMERY of ROSEMOUNT and had children.
2 Jean ( died young). 3 Margaret (died young) 4 Isobel ( died young).
5 Anna Helena, m. Alexander Dalway of Belliehill in Antrim and had 2 sons.
Archibald Edmonstone, 9th of Duntreath (and of Redhall) died in 1689 and
was succeeded by his sole surviving son.
note: page 216. AD1689-1690.
Edinburgh, June 28. The Parliament met.
The Petition of Mr. Adair formerly mentioned, was read, shewing. That the
deceast Edminstown of Duntreath (Archibald Edmonstone) having been
fined by the Privy Council in King Charles II. Reign, in 500 pounds Sterling
for Nonconformity ; the said Mr. Adair (Sir Robert Adair II) became Surety
and Bail for him in Ireland, for the Money with which he paid his Fine ;
wherefore he humbly desires, that the Parliament would be pleased to
make the Heirs of Duntreath liable to the payment of the said Sum of 500
pounds Sterling, and to cause his Estate to be charged therewith ; as also,
the Interest of 10 per Cent. which the Petitioner was forced to pay. Which
Petition having been referred to the Committee, their Report thereupon
was likewise read ; and the House ordered, that the Petitioner should have
his desire granted him, as to the principal Sum and Interest.
