This message poses a very interesting question. For background, I have
summarized a few general facts.
James Addair of Montgomery, Co. +? Annis Harbison had
Thomas Addair = Elizabeth (Betsey) Kirby and they had
James Addair, Barbara Addair, and Jane Addair who married Calvin Tunnell
(Anderson Co., TN)
Calvin and Jane went to Illinois in 1817. Calvin's brother, William Tunnell
had a daughter, Betsy Tunnell who married Vines Hicks, 1817 b. 1788 near
Richmond, Va. d. 15 April 1888 near White Hall, Illinois. The Hicks went to
Illinois in 1817 with the Calvin and Jane Tunnell. Vines was son of David
and Nancy (Thomas) Hicks.
James Addair apparently died in service while he was a minor because there
is some correspondence in 1849 where the family was attempting to recover
money from the government on behalf of his mother, Betsy Kirby Addair.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate any files through the National
Archives. Jane Addair was born in 1795 and was apparently the oldest child,
so it is probable that her brother died in the war of 1812. The sister,
Barbara married Charles Degerley in St. Louis in 1830 (but the marriage does
not seem to be in the records). However, there is an affidavit of the
marriage signed by a Justice of the Peace who performed it.
Thomas Addair disappeared somewhere along the line and I can conceive the
possibility that Betsy may have had an interim marriage. Can you tell me
where the card and the documents to which it refers are located?
