Here is an ALT Publishers CD for anyone interested in Adams Family research.
It includes A Genealogical History of Henry Adams of Braintree, Mass., and His
Descendants; also John Adams of Cambridge, Mass., 1632-1897 and A
Genealogical History Of Robert Adams of Newbury, Mass. And His Descendants,
both compiled and edited by Andrew N. Adams. The two works include more
than 1720 pages of text and complete indexes for an additional 159 pages.
Also included is the unindexed volume, The History of the Thomas Adams and
Thomas Hastings Families of Amherst, Mass. By Herbert Baxter Adams.

Andrew N. Adams was a historian and member of The New England Historic
Genealogical Society. In his
preface Andrew Adams explains that there were a number of very early settlers
in Massachusetts with the surname Adams including Henry of Braintree, John of
Plymouth, William of Ipswich, Robert of Newbury, and George of Watertown.

In his work on the descendants of Henry, he set as his goal to provide as many
family records as possible of the children of Henry Adams of Braintree,
Massachusetts. The work is organized to make its use as easy as possible.
The author explains:

" Each of the sons of Henry Adams is placed separately, and his descendants
given, each child who has descendants being numbered consecutively in the
margin. These numbers appear in brackets at the right of the name, when the
person is again given as a parent in the generation following. It is thus
made easy to trace the ancestry or descent from any point in the book."

The work is set up with sections for each of Henry's sons and their
descendants. Within each section, the work is further divided into
generations.

The first of these sections is devoted to Henry's son ,Henry, who was born in
England in 1604 and married Elizabeth Paine, daughter of Moses Paine. This
family settled in Medfield, MA. The author brings (Lt) Henry's descendants
through eleven generations By the tenth generation, decendants are living
in Rutland, VT, Pittsfield, MA, Queens County, NY, Fenton and Detroit and
Saugatuck, MI, Leominster, MA, Pulaski and Sandy Creek, NY, Cripple Creek, CO,
Racine, WI, Chicago, IL, Dublin, NH, York, PA, Clinton, IA, Wilsonville, CT,
Elvira, NE and many more locations throughout the United States.

Henry and Mary Adam's second son is Thomas, born in England in 1612 and
married in Braintree in 1642. Thomas moved first to Concord, then to
Chelmsford. By the tenth generation, his descendants are in Windsor and
Medina, OH, South Norwalk, CT, LaGrange and Chicago, IL, New York City,
Washington DC, Ludlow and Stowe, VT, Ames, IA, Oakland, CA, Boston and
Worcester, MA, St. Joseph, MO and many other towns and cities.

Third son is Samuel who, like his brother, Thomas, moved first to Concord,
then to Chelmsford. Of him, the author says: he was "Commissioner of the Court
in 1667; he erected mills in the eastern part of Chelmsford, near where Lowell
now is. He had 450 acres of land granted him July 3, 1656, and exclusive
right to run a sawmill,..". By the tenth generation, his descendants were in
Covington, KY, Butte, MT, Arkansas and Moline, KS, Roxbury, MA, Milford and
Manchester, NH, Norwich, CT, and Easton and Farmington, ME.

Fourth son is Jonathan, born in England in 1619, he settled in Medfield where
his house was burned in the King Philip's War in 1676. He rebuilt in what is
now Millis, MA. The author only lists two tenth generation descendants for
Jonathan. However, in the ninth generation, descendants could be found close
to the town their early ancestor originally settled in- Millis, Framingham,
North Grafton, and Worcester, MA as well as Stockton and San Jose, CA.

The fifth son, Peter, also settled in Medfield. His house was burned at the
same time as his brother, Jonathan's. His descendants were living in
Amsterdam, Sherburne and New York City, NY, Winteres, IA, Dunedin, FL, North
Bellingham and Whitinsville, MA Pawtucket, RI and Evart, MI, in the mid to
late 1800's.

The sixth son, Joseph was the one son to remain in Braintree. His is the
line of Adams that produced John and John Quincy Adams, Presidents of the
United States. He was born in England in 1626. He married Abigial Baxter
November 26, 1650. He died December 6, 1694. In this line of the family
we find a number of distinguished men. In the fourth generation, Samuel
Adams, Esq.

" Samuel Adams, 'the elder,' as he was sometimes called to distinguish him
from the son, was a man of wealth and influence in Boston, owning a fine
mansion on Purchase Street at the foot of Summer Street, overlooking the
harbor. He was a justice of the peace, deacon of the old South church,
selectman, member of the legislature and prominent as a leader in politics and
business book."

In the fifth generation, President John Adams

" President John Adams was graduated at Harvard College in 1755; taught
school and studied law at Worcester for two years; was admitted to the Suffolk
bar in 1758, and began practice at Boston, residing at Braintree (Quincy)
until 1768.....
He was one of the five delegates chosen by Massachusetts to the Congress of
1774, at Philadelphia.... [During the Revolutionary War]Adams was the leading
spirit. Aggressive and untiring; 'the column,' as Jefferson denominated him,
upon whom Congress depended......
Upon him devolved the Presidency........
His son wrote of him: 'In figure, John Adams was not tall, scarcely exceeding
middle height, but of a stout, well-knit frame, denoting vigor and long
life......
He has been described as a man of greater learning and force than any of his
contemporaries, but of ungovernable temper and undue self-esteem. His
services to his country were of inestimable value."

Also, in the fifth generation, Hon. Samuel Adams, the Patriot

" Samuel Adams, the Boston patriot, was in some respects. Without doubt, the
most illustrious scion of the Henry Adams family. He was educated in the
Boston Latin School and Harvard College, and although he left College to
engage in business, when his parents desired him to enter the ministry, and
the law was not so respectable as it has since become, the college honored his
scholarship.....
Upon his father's death, 1748, he assumed the business of brewing, and was
called 'Sammy the malster.' When elected tax -collector he was called 'Sammy
the publican.'"

By the tenth generation, members of this family line were in Pittsfield,
Derry, Concord, and other towns in NH, Providence, RI,
Amesbury, Boston, Concord, Melrose, MA, New York City, Chicago and numerous
other places.

The seventh son, Edward, settled with three of his brothers in Medfield. He
married three times, first to Lydia Rockwood, then to Abigail Craft Ruggles,
and, finally, to Sarah Taylor. By the tenth generation, descendants of Ensign
Edward were in Boston, Malden, Plymouth, Natick, New Bedford, Waltham,
Worcester, MA, Chicago, IL, Hackensack, NJ, Toledo, Zanesville, OH, ,
Lancaster and Salem, NH, Albany, Brooklyn, New York City and Rochester, NY,
Bangor, ME, Cumberland, Newport, Pawtucket, Providence and Woonsocket, RI as
well as towns in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Iowa,
Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, Vermont, Virginia,
Washington, and Wisconsin.

Some have claimed that John Adams of Cambridge was an eighth son of Henry of
Braintree. Andrew N. Adams disagrees, he believes that this John may be a
son of George Adams of Watertown.

" John Adams of Cambridge was a millwright, and was resident in Menotomy
about 1650, with his wife 'Anne,' and his eldest daughter 'Rebecca,' who was
born before coming to America. He was admitted freeman in 1666. He made
his will June 1, 1705-6, and died not long thereafter at an advanced age. In
his will he mentions his wife Anne and his sons John and Joseph."

The author traces the descendants of John through nine generations.

Andrew Adams writes that Robert Adams of Newbury was born in England in 1602
and came to Ipswich in 1635 with his wife Eleanor and two children. A third
child, Abraham, was born in Salem, MA in 1639 and six were born in Newbury
from about 1641 through 1651. Of those with known descendants, Joanna, the
eldest daughter and Jacob, the youngest son, relocated to Suffield, CT.
Elizabeth resided in Andover. The other three, Abraham, Mary and Hannah
lived in Newbury. As with the descendants of Henry, the author traces many
of the lines through ten generations. And, as with the descendants of Henry,
when we read about members of the fourth and fifth generations, we find men
who fought in the French and Indian wars and in the American Revolution, for
example, of Capt. John Adams:

"He was a cordwainer, and a soldier in the French war, served at Cape Breton
and Ticonderoga; also served in the Revolution at Cambridge and at Saratoga.
He was commissioned as a First Lieutenant, in Capt. Nathaniel Lovejoy's
Company, Col. Samuel Johnson's Regiment in Apr. 1775, and became a Captain of
militia."

If your name is Adams, here is a wealth of information on various Adams
families. Did you ever wonder if you might be related to the Presidents
Adams? Did an ancestor arrive in North America in colonial times? Did any
of your ancestors fight in the Indian Wars or in the American Revolution.
