The War of the Rebellion: a Compilation of the Official Records of the
Union and Confederate Armies

As the Confederate State of America (CSA) came to the end of its
resistance, one of the CSA general officers was given the responsibiity
for preserving key Confederate records. Many other Confederate records
were being destroyed so they would not fall inot Union hands, but these
records were deliberately preserved with no little difficulty. After the
end of the war, the U.S. Government assigned this former Federal and
Confederate officer the task of arranging the records and preparing them
to be published as a set of bound books by the U.S. Government Printing
Office (GPO). When the task was completed at the beginning of the 20th
Century, the Compilation included several hundred volumes of printed
records.

These records include a wide variety of the correspondence of the War
Departments and the Navy Departments of the USA and CSA. Military and
naval orders, field reports, maps, and an unending variety of other
items were included. The few libraries which still have these books
avaialble for research require several stacks (bookcases) to hold them
all.

Just to use one example of how they can be of use for genealogy, I found
a report fo a cavalry engagement written by the Union commanding
officer, who is an ancestor. The compilation does have indexes, but
there is more information than they indicate.
