Subject: U.S. Military Records Search Procedures

My great uncle Francis McCLURE died at Tacoma, WA on March 3, 1935, and his obit stated he was a veteran. Since he was born in 1848 (PA), he would have been too old for WWI, and even perhaps the Spanish-American war. How would I go about searching for any military records for him, and which ones should I search? I don't know which branch of military he was in. I expect a death cert. shortly, but don't know if that will show any military service. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
