Lisa: you've been very helpful. The marriage record of 1834 for Jonathan Cox and Sarah Mahan is the correct one for my ggggrandparents. There isn't a Family History Library anywhere close to me. I lived in Winchester, KY which is 15 miles from Lexington, KY which has a Family History Center. Now I'm kicking my rear cause I never made the visits. Life was in a turmoil so I can't be too hard on myself....but still
Is it only possible to find these records at the History library, or can they be ordered into another library? Evansville has a library that has been devoted to genealogy in a large part. Over twenty-five years ago, when I first began, this library would order census records for a particular state...county.
I've not confirmed Jonathan was a Quaker...this is the Cox groups opinion. The book you mentioned isn't the one I was referring to. Also I've email back and forth with this man's wife. I've noticed she now has Jonathan's birth state listed as Ohio...which I shared with her...but she also still has him included in the Cox group from North Carolina.
The name of the book is "Ruddick Family in America" by ? Hanneman. On Page 102 in this book it is written as follows: Jonathan Cox (112), son of William and Nancy Ann (Ruddick) Cox; born on January 1, 1810, Lost Creek, Tennessee. On January 18, 1834, he married Sarah "Sally" Mahan, (born 1817, KNox co, Kentucky). She was a daughter of Thomas and Anna (Cox) Mahan (?). Jonathon and Sally resided in Jennings county, Indiana for several years before relocating near New Farmington about 1845. He may have died here about 1857. Notice the birth place. The person who sent this to me also admitted the book of 200 pages also has mistakes. She feels though this information is correct. Our common ancestor is Jonathan Cox and Sarah Mahan.
Perhaps I'm just a cautious person, but until I've proven something myself, it's hard for me to accept information that ignores something like the "state born in in the 1850 Census." Now I do know census takers made many many mistakes, but I also feel Jonathan knew his state of birth.
I've also been told the proof is in the Lost CreekMM meeting minutes. Also though I've also been told not much information regarding Jonathan is in these minutes. He supposedly had a twin. Someone has a picture of his twin, but none of him is known.
I've written a book, and I apologize. Get me going and my fingers fly.

Don't know if this is the marriage record you seek, but
there is a Jonathan Cox married to a Sally Mahan 18 Jan 1834
in Jackson County Indiana in a database at ancestry.com
Indiana Marriages, 1802-1892
If you live near a Family history library, go there and order the film
for Jackson county marriages. While you are there, look for
the deaths and probate records for this county.

If you need a volunteer, go to www.raogk.org and follow the
instructions
to find someone to get the marriage cert for you. There are 2 Jackson
county volunteers.
Here is page with information on Quakers in Ohio and Indiana - if your
man
was a Quaker, his vital records might be found in the monthly meeting
reports

Here is a page which talks about Jeremiah Cox - A Quaker from North
Carolina.
If this is the Cox family you are talking about, I would suggest
finding the probate
record for this Jeremiah. According to this site, he owned much of
the land in
Richmond Ohio. http://www.roadmuseum.org/1_05_richmond,_indiana.htm
Here also is a "comprehensive surname index to part five of the six
part set of
Abstracts of the Records of the Society of Friends in Indiana by
Willard Heiss"

Perhaps this is the book the other researchers referred to?
With any luck, his will can be found, and hopefully will answer the
question.

Okay Bob...this is it. His name is Jonathan Cox.He is my
ggggrandfather. In the 1850 Census, Jackson Co, Vernon Twp, IN it is
stated he was born in Ohio. By the 1860 Cenus, Jonathan has died.
This is the last census in which I've been able to locate Sallie.
However I've found some of his sons in later census records, and they
have stated their father was born in Ohio. Jonathan and Sarah were
married in Indiana in 1834. Sarah was born in Kentucky. Per the 1850
Census, Jonathan was born about 1810.

>1850 was the first census record I found him in. In this census he
was still living. The place of birth is listed as a state other than
the one he was living in. By the next census year he has died. The
children have all listed their father's state of birth as the one
their father first listed in the 1850 census. At this point, I have no
proof for either state. This is where the problem comes in though. His
surname is the same as a very large group who is researching this
surname. Although apparently they also have no written proof, He is
being included in this family as well as his children and their
children etc. Right now the written state of his birth is one the
group has surmised he had to have been born in making him fit into
their family. > snip
If any of the children was born before 1840 then the subject probably
would be in the Census under his own name in the state given in the
1850 Census. Look for him with a family that corresponds with the ages
in 1850.
If you can't find him in the state recorded in 1850, look in the
states between that state and where he lived in 1850.
Giving more specific information and asking how to find him would be
much more productive.
