Faye: you are absolutely correct. I mistakenly always believed the LDS had correct info. Your gggrandfather is a prime example of how untrue this is. What can be helpful is to look at information as a guide. It may point one in a direction that hadn't been thought of. Sometimes the direction is a deadend, and sometimes the direction has a pot of gold at the end.

Unfortunately it was rarely a man who answered the census taker. Most of
the censuses were done during the daylight hours, during planting season and
the men were not at home. If they worked in the city they were at work. The
only people home were either the wives or children. There are many, many
stories of incorrect information given by spouses, children, and neighbors.
If I was going to doubt any piece of census information it would be the
birth location of an adult male as well as the information about the birth
locations of his parents.
