Subject: [ADVANRES] searching for the family name...spelled correctly
Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2007 22:36:24 -0800 (PST)

"I've seen cousins practically
go to war over the "correct spelling" of the
ancestor's name. Or,
worse,
assume no relationship because
the name "isn't spelled the same." And, vice-versa."

It's funny, but it isn't! I have a family name that I
swear, I have seen spelled 10,000 different ways from
Sunday. According to my mother, there is only one
"correct" way to spell the name, and anything else is
"wrong" and those people aren't related. What makes it
worse is, there are at least 4 different spellings in
the county we live. I have contacted all of them, and
got pretty much the same statement from everyone! It
took me many, many conversations to semi-convince my
mother that these people are all related from a common
ancestor. I won't hold my breath on ever really
convincing her, but at least now she doesn't scrunch
up her face and purse her lips into "no" if I mention
one of the names I am researching!
