I did try and find him. Not much luck. But I did find some civil war stuff
for a Burnett Curtis. My gut feeling it it's him. The family above is
Carlton, and Curtis, isn't that far off spelling wise, I think he may have
just wrote the wrong name for some reason. Or who ever gave his name,
didn't know his last name. I wouldn't know what to give for my neighbors.

I found exactly the same phenomenon with a Donaldson family I was searching.

On the 1910 census, everyone's name was correct except that their surname
was Johnson. Head of household James Donaldson had a brother Peter Johnson,
listed elsewhere. I just cannot figure out why they wouldn't have a firm
surname by 1910.

I haven't been watching Footnote and didn't realize that some compiled
service records were available.

Can you find this Burnett Curtis on a census other than 1880? Maybe your man

was like my Donaldson and couldn't decide what name he wanted to use.
