Hi Sal,
I can't help you with your query re BSAP records but I found a few records
in the National Archives of South Africa (online) which may refer to your
great great uncle: The records refer to a George William Farmaner in 1888 as
well as a Joseph Farmener - perhaps be a relative. The records are archived
at the Cape Town Archive Repository (denoted by the term KAB) and you can
try to contact them by e-mail. The web page is:
http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm
Click on "Contact Information" and search for "Western Cape" to get e-mail
addresses for the Cape Town Archives staff.
To do your own search, from the above link, click:
- "Search National...."
- "RSA" (to select all databases)
- enter search terms (names), one per field
- Click on "Search" button.
Please note the online records are only an index of the actual records.
If you search using only the term "Farmaner", there are 9 records including
names like Christine Farmaner, Herbert Farmaner, and an FC Farmaner besides
George and Joseph.
Below is the text as copied from the Archive records online which refer to
George Farmaner.
Regards,
Gerold.

Subject: [AFR-ZIMBABWE] Location of historical records
Can anyone help me as to where I can find records for the British Chartered
Company of Rhodesia and the British South Africa Police.
The obituary of my great great uncle George Farmaner, died 7/4/1914, says
"He joined the British South Africa Police in 1889, and in 1893 was
appointed Chief Clerk, Civil Commissioner, at Salisbury. After a few years
as acting magistrate at Umtali he returned to Salisbury in 1897, and the
next year was appointed Civil Commissioner. Mr. Farmaner was well known in
South Africa as one of the pioneers of the British Chartered Company of
Rhodesia."
Until I found his obituary in the online Times, I had no idea of what he had
done in his life and to be honest I can't say that I know much more now!!
I would like to find out more but I have no idea where the records are
situated.
Many thanks
Sal
