I have to write a research paper for a class on slavery. My topic is
"slaves granted manumission in Rowan County, NC 1800-1850" and I'm
looking at what circumstances they are granted manumission. The problem
I'm having is that I don't know where to find this information.
Although this is for a class, this is also for myself since I know that
one of my ancestors was a slave of the Barringer family in Rowan county
and was probably granted manumission around 1840 or so, but we don't
know for certain. I did find a dissertation that was written by a
student here at NCSU a couple years ago that has a chart of court cases
involving slaves and has them grouped into categories and there are some
cases that were about manumitting slaves, but none of them were in Rowan
County. Any help would be greatly appreciated!.
