Well, honestly I did some checking on the net as well....I've not found
any pictures yet either.
As far as I can tell...its the side of the tooth, closest to the gum.
Mine is a vertical line...goes up to the gum line, so I must be more
European. One of the guys here from India, says that I look a British
citizen.
I'm okay with that...as I want to prove my Stuart line to a Highland
Clan. I definitely have the red highlights, compared to 95% of my
cousins who are dark haired, dark skinned....but we are all brown eyed.
Did anyone see the show on PBS (Channel 13 in the DFW area)?? It was
about tracing your ancestry using DNA, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Hope everyone had a great time with this little bit of trivia,
Lisa :o)

Hi Lisa,
Well, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to find out about this
Carrabelle's Cusp. I did some checking on google to see if there was an
example to follow to determine what is meant by a "cusp". I am still not
sure.
You said the "surface" of the maxillary first molar will be "smooth", if
you are of Native American heritage.
For clarification purposes, do you mean "smooth", like your top
{maxillary} front teeth are smooth?
I understand the "occusal" portion is the "chewing surface", correct?
So, we can then say the "smooth surface is the surface of the tooth
closest to your cheek??
So, we are not speaking of he occlusal surface that has ridges for
chewing - resembling a "mountain terrain"?
So is thee Carabelli's cusp" a little vertical indentation on the
surface of the tooth closet to the cheek?
I don't mean to be silly here, I simply am not up on the technical
terms. Maybe your answers will help someone else who isn't clear on it
either?
Thank you for your help.

Taken from "The Quill"
Native American Ancestry? Ask your Dentist!
Do you have a family tradition that says one of your ancestors
was a
Native American? Well the proof may be in your mouth and your
dentist
can tell you.
A little bump on your maxillary first molars is called a
Carrabelli's
Cusp. This is the sixth tooth from the center of your front
upper
teeth. People who are strictly of western European origin have
this
bump on that tooth. People who have Native American (Indian)
heritage
are missing this cusp. The sides of the maxillary first molars
will be
smooth.
Please note! People who are of Asian heritage will also be
missing the
cusp.
Thanks to Dr. Vernon Nesmith, DDS of Wichita Falls, Texas for
furnishing
the photographs and information.
