Union Congregational Church
Mabury, Alabama
During the 1870’s in the little town of Marbury, there were three religious
bodies
the Congregationalist, the Methodist, and the Baptist. There seem to be so
few
Methodist that finally no longer held regular church services so with the
help of
three preachers Rev. Caswell Culver and Doc Wells, Congregationalist and
Rev. Wingard, a Methodist they worked together to unite the Union
Congregational Church.
In 1882 , Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lake deeded to the Union Church an acre of land for
the erection of a building with Rev. Caswell Culver the first pastor. Culver
was
born in Tolbert County, Ga. on 25, August 1844 and served in the 59th Alabama
Infantry until he was wounded by a shell explosion in 1864. He married
Margaret A. Batson on January 14, 1868, and served as Tax Collector for Elmore
County. In addition to Union Church, he pastored several churches for the
neighboring churches until his death in 1918.
In 1901 the church ceased to be an independent Congregational Methodist by
entering the Southeast Convention of Congregational Churches. By this time
the church had grown and was not centrally located. With the efforts of Mr.
Jack Johnson and Rev. Archie Heath the church was moved to the present day
site. Mr. Jack Johnson was an ordained deacon, the Sunday School
Superintendent for forty years, and a financial contributor.
