List,
I have not had time to do anything in a few wks, due to my new
granddaughter being hospitalized for heart problems, and having to be
monitored for 24 hrs a day for a major heart murmer. Although my progress
remains the same, the monitary help is building up to help during the
winter searches, and cleanups. Everything that comes in to me goes in one
pot for this purpose. All of my sales and all contributions.
I would like to comment on Sabrina's message which I feel is directed
toward me since no records have ever been sold except by Mr.Godwin and
myself. For the Clayton area funeral homes, only ONE existed, that was
Godwin/Dowling, for Eufaula, it was Jaxon/Dowling/Chapman
I would like to clear one thing up.
NO records of funeral homes have been stolen to my knowledge especially
for resell!
I and Mr. Godwin are the ONLY two "selling" funeral records, which I might
add with permission of Chapman Funeral Home here in Eufaula and Kent
Funeral Home here in Eufaula by Mr. Godwin.
I took photos of the Clayton Funeral records at the courthouse, the book
NEVER left the vault, I transcribed from my close up photos.
Mr. Godwin transcribed a book called:
"Barbour County Alabama Funeral Records Jan.1,1935-Jan.12,1940"-Godwin
Funeral Home.
My cd is called:
"Dowling Funeral Home Records 1938-1948"-Which I might add took me 2 yrs.
to transcribe with over 1,300 people in them, with sole permission from
Sid Chapman! He now has these old records back and was kind enough to
allow me to keep them that long....as he knew me well enough to know I was
very honest and trustworthy of them.
These records are FREE to the public through Sid Chapman who is always
happy to help others find their family, or for ease of searching more than
a few people I have the cd for sale, which includes 800 whites, 500 blacks.
As I own copyrights to it, since I took the time to transcribe it, but I
do NOT own nor have I stolen any records, nor has Mr. Godwin. No one else
has had access to these or any other funeral records accept for those open
to the public in the large size book in the courthouse. Other records are
non-existant to my knowledge and to the Funeral home owners knowledge. The
records dated back to 1938 were well kept, the 1926-31 were in faded poor
condition,I transcribed the chosen few legible ones, there is no way any
other records existed, at least not legible ones. (lost records noted
below)These were reported lost in the 1980's.)
HISTORY OF THE BARBOUR COUNTY FUNERAL HOMES:
According to the Godwin Book:Only parts are being typed out of his book.
1931 Mr. Godwin worked for Dowling Funeral Home.-It also had a branch in
Eufaula.
1n 1948 H.B. Dowling died, and it became Godwin Funeral Home until
Mr.Godwin's death in 1981.
ALL records (death cert.) were recorded through the Vital statistics upon
each death.
The records from 1931-1934 were searched for by Mr. Godwin and his friend
Ruth Neilson, and "could not be located."
These have never been sold, either.
My notes: The father of J.J.Jaxon-Mayor purchased a branch of Dowling(in
Eufaula), it was then sold to Sid Chapman.(I may have the "order" of
owners wrong) These funeral homes have been bought and sold swaping hands
we are lucky that ONLY the 1931-1934 which could not be found in 1983 or
close to that date.
As for Clio, Louisville, etc. I have no knowledge whatsoever as to what
they had.
Thanks,
Bonnie
