Subject: [[ALBERT]] Alberts at the court of George III
Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 10:14:16 +0100
I have traced my ancestry back to a family of Alberts who were in service at the Court of Queen Charlotte and King George III. Much information has been found in the book "Court and private life in the time of Queen Charlotte; being the journals of Mrs. Papendiek, assistant keeper of the wardrobe and reader to Her Majesty; edited by her granddaughter Mrs. Vernon Delves Broughton. London, 1887. 2v."
The Alberts in question descended from two brothers, Frederick and Louis (or Lewis). Frederick Albert was born in Frankfurt, 28 Jan 1733 and was in the service of the Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in north Germany. When Princess Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz married King George III of England, she requested Frederick to come to England as her favourite page and confident. Although he didn't want to leave Germany, he finally agreed. He was also ordered to marry his sweetheart Sophia Dorothea, also against his wishes.
Frederick and Sophia had the following children:
George, born Strelitz 1762
Charlotte Louisa Henrietta, born London 2 July 1765, died 1839, buried at Windsor. Married Christopher Papendick 16 Jan 1783, St Georges Hanover Sq. Author of above reference.
George Edward b & d 1768 St James Palace.
Anna Sophia b. 24 Dec 1770 St James, d. 1773, referred to by Mrs P. as Sophia Dorothea.
George Frederick b. 18 Dec 1771 London
Sophia Elizabeth Augusta b. 19 Sep 1775 London. Married Lawrence Joseph Cosse (artist) 6 Aug 1803, St Marylebone.
In 1764 Frederick was joined in England by his brother Louis. He too was appointed as a page, but appears to have mainly served at Kew. He married Elizabeth Broughton 29 Dec 1767. Louis died 1798.
They had the following:-
Hugh - dates unknown, page to the Prince of Wales, later paymaster to the 58th Regiment (of Foot?)
William - dates unknown, probably in royal service, later appointed to Customs.
Charlotte Elizabeth b 1769 (EST) (My ancestor) Music teacher. Married Thomas Abbott Green 8 Jun 1836 St Mary Bryanston Sq. Marylebone when she was 66 and he was 78, due, I suspect to him being already married! However they started having children in 1800. (NB Charlotte is referred to in IGI as Abbert). Died 63 Baker Street, 2 Mar 1847 of influenza. Thomas and Charlotte are buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.
George Frederick b. 23 Aug 1770
Isabella b. 5 Mar 1772
Sophia Frances EST 1779, married Charles Bradbury 26 Mar 1801 St Georges Hanover Sq.
Augusta Elizabeth b. 2 Jan 1780. Married Philip Anthony Corri (composer) 15 Sep 1798 Old Church St Pancras (see Internet for more on Corri and scandal involving wife).
Eliza Ann c. 10 April 1783 St Martins in the Fields
Frederick 16 April 1787
I hope this is a help to somebody. Also if anybody can fill the gaps or has any other related data I would be pleased to know. There is another Albert family concurrent with above, Joseph Albert (married Ann Lloyd) who I suspect may be another brother. Any info?
