Of all my subscriptions, this mailing list has offered the best research.
Now, I'm hoping you can help me clear up a mystery about my
great-grandparents. I recently found their Butler County marriage
registration, which lists the following:
Mr. J.H. YOUNG (26) and Miss Mollie WEAVER (20) registered for marriage with
J.L. POWELL, J.O.P. on September 17, 1886 in Butler County. The
registrations says the marriage occurred October 3, 1886 at the Mrs. DAVIE's
(Davis?) residence, and was legitimized by S.J. CAMPBELL, J.O.P.
Going backward from the marriage date, I have been unable to find any Mollie
WEAVER in the 1880 census in Butler County. I have located a J.H. YOUNG, of
the correct age, in the household of a B.H. YOUNG in the 1880 Butler County
census.
Going forward from the marriage date, I have been unable to find any
matching YOUNGS in the entire state of Alabama in the 1900 census, although
my grandfather reports on his Social Security application that he was born
in Greenville around 1900. The family reappears in Baldwin County, Alabama,
in the 1910 census, with three children: Conrad (or Conard) YOUNG, Bertha
YOUNG (who married a John JOINER four years later), and my grandfather Whit
Worth YOUNG. Other records indicate my great-grandfather's name was John
Harrison (J.H.) YOUNG.
My request is simple: I would appreciate any information or leads you could
provide on any of these people. My review of the archives shows a few YOUNGS
in Butler County during the latter 19th Century, but very few WEAVERS. I
suspect HARRISON is a family name, but I am uncertain. I wonder who the Mrs.
DAVIE is, in whose home J.H. and Mollie wed? I also wonder, given his age,
whether J.H. had married previously?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. I would be happy to
share what I have uncovered.
