Subject: [ALBUTLER] Assistance Needed
Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 17:01:55 EST
Since we are seeking your assistance, let me plead for a little more of it.
I have been trying to join the United Daughters of the Confederacy for about
two years. I have yet to prove I am a direct descendant of my 3rd
great-grandfather John A. Cooper Stinson. There seems to be a couple of
links missing which I can not document to their liking. I need your help in
proving these links.
John A. Cooper Stinson
b. 19 October 1846, Butler County, Al.
d. 9 August 1910, Providence Cemetery
He served as a private in Company A, 1st Battalion, Alabama Infantry, C. S.
A. during the Civil War. Enlistment records indicate that he joined the
infantry in the fall of 1962 at Ft. Morgan, Al. He was captured by Union
soldiers in 1864. The place of captured has not been determined. He was
released from the military at Union Prison Camp in Elmira, New York, on June
11, 1865. (pension records)
I need a copy of a census that will show their first born son, George Leander
Stinson listed below. This would be the 1870 or 1880 census. I must prove
this link.
2. George Leander Stinson, son of above
b. 15 December 1869, Butler County, Al.
m. Texanna Smith
d. 10 December 1941, Providence Cemetery
I need a marriage certificate of George Leander Stinson and Texanna Smith,
daughter of William Jason Smith and Mary Frances Anna Gibbons. They were
married either in Butler County or Monroe County probably in 1892 as first
child was born in October 1893.
The UDC isn't willing to accept a photo of their joint tombstone at
Providence Cemetery in Butler County as proof of marriage. It is beginning
to look as if they weren't married, though I believe they were. Texanna may
be a nickname but that is all I have as it is listed on the tombstone.
Unfortunately, all of the heirs of this man are deceased and it the last one
in 2000, no records have been made available.
3. John Jason Stinson, son of above
b. 1 November 1893
d. 5 October 1926, Providence Cemetery
I need something concrete linking John Jason to his parents. He has not been
found on the 1900 census by one of the UDC presidents who has been helping me
look. The next census where he might appear would be the 1910.
These are my missing links. If I can provide to their satisfaction that
these are father, son, and grandson, I can provide the other needed
documents. IF anyone can, and would assist me on this, I would greatly
appreciate it.
