Subject: [ALBUTLER] Henry Jones and the 1870 Butler County Census...UPDATE!!
Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 08:34:49 -0400
As you all may know,
I am still looking to positively identify, through Census records, my great
great grandfather Henry Jones, an African-American man born in Greenville in
1863, and who his father was...so far, this is my only lead, given to me by
Mrs. Kay Anderson:
1870 JONES HENRY Butler County AL 342 Greenville P.O. Federal
Population Schedule AL 1870 Federal Census Index AL115139604
Through the kindness of the Butler County Genealogical Society, I now have
in my possession a copy of the marriage certificate for Henry Jones and
Laura Palmore from Dec 30, 1884/Jan 1, 1885...I am overjoyed to have this...
NEW INFORAMATION
However, just the other day, I got an email from Pam Howard
[] regarding the 1880 Census and my great great grandfather
Henry Jones...I was also informed by Mrs. Howard that "the Henry Jones on an
1870 census would have been the head of house, not a seven year old little
boy". So, I took that piece of information and ran with it...To all whom
are interested, look at this particular entry:
Census Place: Claiborne, Monroe, Alabama

I know for a fact that Wilcox, Butler and Monroe Counties share a
border...and I also know that there was plenty of movement in those days
"between counties"...
It is very possible that my great great grandfather Henry Jones was "16"
during the compilation of the 1880 Census...I JUST DON'T KNOW WHERE
CLAIBORNE IS!! I have never heard of it...Tell me, for curiousity purposes,
where, geographically, is Claiborne....and...and
COULD THIS BE THE HENRY JONES...MY HENRY JONES...AND HIS PARENTS...THE SAME
PEOPLE THAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR?
AND IF FRANK JONES WAS HIS FATHER, A FORMER SLAVE NONETHELESS, BORN IN
VIRGINIA...HOW DID HE GET TO LOWER ALABAMA?
