Subject: [ALBUTLER] Henry Jones...and a previously unknown descendant found on the g enealogy list...

Well, Ken Jones,
It is refreshing to find a previously unknown distant relative through the
genealogy list!!This is amazing!!
For starters, this is my, quote-unquote, connection to the man:
The late Robert Jones, Sr. was my grandfather...he grew up in Snow Hill,
Alabama...
His father, and my great grandfather, was Johnny Jones (1890-1939)...
Johnny Jones had a brother named Wade Jones (1894-1934)...
Johnny and Wade grew up in Snow Hill, Alabama...
Their father, and my great great grandfather, was this man Henry Jones of
Greenville, Alabama...
Henry Jones married Laura Palmore, my great great grandmother, on January 1,
1885 over at Mary Palmer's place...the Reverend was Moses Seales...
Ken, let me ask you this...based upon the "linkages" I just wrote down, and
since you are indeed a descendant of Henry Jones...then...for the purposes
of moving on further back in research...is this so called Frank Jones who
lived in Claiborne, Alabama during the 1880 Census...and Adeline Jones, his
wife, the actual father and mother of the person we are both descended
from?...or was Henry Jones' father also named Henry Jones too? And why is
all this so difficult?
Ken, I also received two emails over the lists today:
The first gentleman said that he remebered a Black barber from the early
1930's in Greenville by the name of Henry Jones who had nothing but white
clients....his shop eventually became Snowden's...not too far from the
Butler County Courthouse...
The second gentleman indicated that there was a Henry Jones from the early
1950's who farmed for a Jim Reynolds...this Henry Jones rode a mule all the
time...even had it tied to a post in front of his house...and this Henry
Jones was murdered for his money...hit in the head with an ax during a
robbery attempt after selling a cotton crop...
Does this sound familiar to you? Does it ring a bell? Is this still our
Henry Jones?
If you know the actual name of Henry Jones' father...please tell me...tell
us all because we all are waiting with "Held Breath" and dying for an
answer...
Steve

Steve: You and I have something in common. We're both the great grandsons
of a Henry Jones from Butler County. Different people, but your inquiry did
raise interest.
Best of luck in your search.
As for how your Henry was born in Va. and got to South Alabama, it's a good
guess that Frank, if he is the ancestor you're looking for, was sold in
slavery to someone in Monroe County. Monroe County, as I understand it, was
a major player in slave trade, and that also could be the reason he got the
hell out when he became a free man.
I've often thought I had a difficult time in researching Jones, but mine
were white and there were decent records, even if the parties themselves
were illiterate. I can only imagine how trying and extremely difficult your
search must be. I'll keep my eyes open for you while I'm researching my own
Henry Jones, and I'll definitely let you know if I stumble onto something.
