"Preston Brooks was born in VA and migrated first to GA, living in Wilkes Co. and later in Oglethorpe. He and his wife, Mary, entered land in Butler Co. in 1836. Of their children, their son, E. Hardeman Brooks married Mary Smith and had three children: Mary who married a Merrill, James I. and Thomas H. Brooks who married Shine sisters."

Info from Milton and Tim Slawson: Preston Brooks was in Wilkes and Oglethorpe Co. Georgia before coming to Alabama in the 1830s. He is on the 1820 census of Wilkes Co., Ga. living next to a William Brooks (a possible brother?). Preston was a soldier in the War of 1812 listed on the muster roll of Capt. John E. Little's Company of Harris 1st Regiment, Georgia Militia. He was a lieutenant in the 166th District Co. of Militia, Wilkes Co., Ga.

Info from Gloria Melton: Preston Brooks was an orphan on the 1806 or 1807 land lottery.
