This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.

Message Board Post:
1. A Melvina BLACK born late in 1863 married Marshall Paul DICKENS in Butler Co. Ala. in 1883 at the home of Robert COLE and died in 1902 (This according to Odessa and Nancy who have Melvina's parents as Hugh M. BLACK and Frances GAFFORD).
2. Hugh M. BLACK is on the 1850-1880 censuses of Butler Co. In the 1860 census he has a daughter M., age 7, born in 1853. In the 1870 census he has a daughter Melvina, age 17, born in 1853. By 1880, Melvina is not in his household. This could mean she was already married, and I have a note of a Viney BLACK marriage to W. H. Moore 07 JAN 1872.
They are on the 1880 census with a 6-year-old daughter and other younger children.

William MOORE Son S Male W 5 AL AL AL

They are likely on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses too since I think I've found them on the 1930 census (below).
3. A Melvina Black born in 1853 [matches the birth year of Hugh M. Black's daughter] married W. H. Moore and died around 1928. (This info from UNKNOWN who posted a query in a newspaper article I found in the BLACK file in the geney room in the Greenville Library. The query says: "The next child [of Hugh M. Black and Frances Gafford] was Melvina, born in 1853. Her nickname was "Viney." She married W. Hilary Moore. We do not have his date of birth nor death. His tombstone reads: age 95. The birthdates given in this article were taken from Bible records...Melvina's tombstone shows age 75 (which should make death date 1928). Would appreciate exact dates if anyone has them." )
I think I have them and wish I knew who wanted them.

William H Moore died 02 Jan 1943 Butler 5 2065 4
Malvina Moore died Aug 1930 Butler 37 3 W. H. 18155
The information in the Bible record and query from UNKNOWN seems to match the above Wm. H. MOORE and wife Melvina.
4. Robert Cole is on the 1880 census with a niece Elvina, age 14, in his household born abt. 1866 [appears to be Melvina, the daughter of Thomas M. Black, as the names of other BLACK children in COLE household match those in Thomas M. BLACK's estate record. This Melvina's mother's name was Louisa.] It would make sense that this Melvina would marry in Robert Cole's home in 1883 and that her first name might be Louisa.
Odessa says, "This has always been puzzling to DICKENS researchers. We can't see how W. Hilary MOORE fits into the picture since Louisa Melvina (Viney) BLACK definitely married Marshall Paul DICKENS on June 15, 1883. They had 7 children. We have scratched our heads over this conundrum for decades."
-----------------
It could be a case of another "same-name mix-up." Using the information above, I just think it's more more likely that the Louisa Melvina BLACK DICKENS who died in 1902 was the daughter of Thomas M. BLACK, and the Melvina "Viney" BLACK MOORE who died in 1930 was the daughter of Hugh M. BLACK. This would solve the conundrum.
Isn't this worth considering?
Ordering the death certificates and getting the obits might also help. I'll try to do that.
