Thanks, Mary. D. T. MELTON is Durham T. MELTON. It looks like the John HEEP who was living with him in 1880 might be the infamous outlaw.

Durham MELTON's brother (?) Michael N. MELTON married Dupree HUGGINS. At least two of Dupree's brothers (Columbus and Richard) are buried at Providence Cemetery. Some of her family are buried at Coleman Cemetery in Monroe Co. This Huggins family moved to Butler Co. from Dale Co. Alabama and seem to be tied somehow to the Tobias LEE family from Darlington, SC.

So it loooks as if we have a family of HIPPs who maybe were orphans--Julia, Josiphene, John, and Lucy--raised by neighbors (or kinfolks?). The only two other Hip/Hipp/Heep/Heap names I've seen in Butler Co. were Wm. H. and Wm. J. HEAP.

The MELTONS moved to Monroe Co. before 1900, along with some LEEs, HUGGINSes, BLACKs, COLEMANs, and others.
This HUGGINS family has several marriage ties to my BLACKs.
