Allie Abernathy's Scrapbooks 1893-1923

In Memoriam
Joel D. Harris, perhaps the oldest citizen in Chambers County, was born April
3, 1833 and died Nov. 27, 1919, making his stay on earth nearly 87 years. Up to
the time of his death he was active in mind and body and his hearing and eye-
sight were good. He was married in 1870 to Mrs. Pop Werrell. He was a kind and
affectionate husband. Although she has been dead 30 years he proved that he
loved and cherished her memory by his regular monthly visits to her
gave. "Uncle Joe" as he was well and favorably known, numbered his friends by
his acquaintances. He was of a cheerful disposition, quiet and unassuming, and
for more than 70 years a consistant and honored member of the Methodist church.
He inlisted in the Confederate Army as a private but was promoted to second
lieutenant in Co. C, in the old 14th Alabama regiment. Too much cannot be said
of him as a soldier. He was brave and true and never murmured of hardships or
short rations. He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness, May 6, 1864. The
writer of this sketch, who knew him personally for over 60 years, never heard
him speak ill of any one or do any harm to any one person. He spent most of his
life in this community. He leaves one sister, Mrs. S.R. Talley, and a host of
relatives and friends to morn his death. He was laid to rest in the Rock Spring
Cemetery after very appropriate services conducted by Rev. Holmes of LaFayette.
Peace to thy ashes, "Brother Soldier."
An Old Veteran
