The Autauga Genealogical Society will meet Sunday, October 16, at 2 p.m. at Peoples Bank in Prattville. The program, "Fictional Southern Women: History or Folklore, Reality or Stereotype?", will be presented by Nancy Grisham Anderson, Associate Professor of English at Auburn University in Montgomery.
People routinely use terms like "Southern belle", "mammy" and "steel magnolia", and we all smile and nod knowingly. Do we really know what these terms mean?
We will explore the meaning of these terms with a discussion of the Southern woman through history and through selected characters in Southern fiction.
Visitors are always welcome to attend the meetings. We regret that we cannot mail handouts to those unable to attend the meetings.
