Thanks for the offers of help with this cemetery. I've been told that
it's the New Salem Cemetery (Baptist) in Chilton Co, not either of the
ones in Shelby. I see one of those in the three that Irma mentioned in
the Shelby Co. cemeteries listed online, but that's evidently not the
one.
A cousin has written w/ the names Civility Ann Ball (sp. all sort of
ways - Slyvie, Sylvia, Syvie, etc) who mar. Thomas Carden.
" ...Today I got a death certificate for my great great grandfather
Rufus Carden b.Jan 23 1860; d.Jan 15 1945 and it states his parents were
Thomas Carden and Sylivia Ball. Her tombstone at New Salem in Chilton
county says Civility Ann Ball. It states he was born in Munford, Alabama
(Talladega Co.). "
Julia asked for some census info. There is a little census info. for
Talladega Co.1860 :
Thomas F. and Civility Carden are on the 1860 Census in Talladega
County, Alabama. They are identified by initials only, hers being SA.
Thomas and Civility are listed as being born in Georgia, and the 3 kids,
MJ, age 3, R, age 1 [this is prob. RUFUS], are listed as being born in
Alabama. There is also a 19 year old male with the initials of W. V.,
born Alabama.
It seems that any more info. about Civility & her family has 'eluded'
researchers for years ... maybe it's in retaliation for missp. her name
so much & so badly <ha-ha> ! Her name being so unusual has helped a
little in finding out more, but it's actually the CARDEN connection that
I'm following.
IDK why Civility is in Chilton Co., but maybe she's living w/ (or near)
one of her children in her 'old age'.
I'm just hoping to find that gravestone info. in New Salem Cem. in
Chilton Co.
Thanks, Martha

Thank you for sending the 1860 census info, I am assuming you do not know
where they are in 1870 yet??? If not I have located them. Please email me
directly if you need this information.
Julia

Martha,
I have the book Cemeteries of Chilton but I don't find Thomas or Civility
Carden/Cardin in the index. I do find a younger Thomas A. Carden listed
in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, located on CC 29 East, via US 31
South from Thorsby, Chilton County, Alabama on page 232.
Carden, Thomas A. 1887-10-14 1912-7-28 Husb/Minnie
Carden
I don't find anyone with the surname BALL listed in the index to Cemeteries
of Chilton.
Sorry I couldn't help more.

All,
Here's a note from Fred Lawrence letting me know some more about NEW
SALEM Cemetery, not New Smyrna as
I had previously written.
Thanks to all, Martha
Subject: Re: Civility Ball
Martha, I have spent several hours in NEW SALEM cemetery, this is just
north of Clanton just before you get to Thorsby, It is an old church but
well kept. I have digital images of all the graves in that cemetery and
am in the process of creating a new audit of the cemetery. Chilton
County wants to publish a new cemetery book in the future and this audit
will be part of it. I will send you the other Carden's that are there.
- Fred Lawrence
Could that be because Chilton County used to be part of Shelby, County?
