MOBILE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS ALL-DAY SEMINAR FOR 37TH
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION -- FEBRUARY 13, 1999
To celebrate its 37th Anniversary, the Mobile Genealogical Society will
present the Heritage Quest Road Show on Saturday, February 13, 1999.
This event will take place at the society's headquarters -- the old St.
Joan of Arc School located at the corner of Elmira Street and South Ann
Street in Mobile, Alabama. If you have Internet access, an interactive
map to this location can be found at --
http://www.siteone.com/clubs/mgs/map.htm
Leland K. Meitzler, professional genealogist, founder and executive
editor of Heritage Quest Magazine will be the presenter. Mr. Meitzler
will speak on three topics during the day-long event. "Locating Your
Ancestor's Family When All You Know Is The State!" covers a broad
variety of statewide, as well as, nationwide indexes that will allow one
to locate a family. Also discussed under this topic is how to locate
someone with an extremely common name.
The second topic, "Your Ancestor
Was Not Destroyed In The Courthouse Fire!" deals with substituting
records to take the place of documents destroyed in fires, floods, etc.
The third topic, "Advanced Use of State & Federal Census Records"
includes the historical aspects of the various censuses that directly
affect the researcher. Discussed will be a wide variety of census
information, census copies, indexes, special schedules and where to
locate the information. The day will conclude with a
question-and-answer session.
The "Road Show" will also include an opportunity for shopping! On hand
will be a display of hundreds of titles of books (including genealogical
guidebooks), computer programs (including virtually all the CD-ROMs
currently available to genealogists), as well as, miscellaneous
genealogical supplies (forms, charts, etc.). Also available will be a
large selection of historic maps of the various United States and
European countries. This huge display will allow genealogists to see
the product before they buy.
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the seminar begins at 9:00 a.m.
Lunch will be an on-site potluck covered-dish affair. The fee is $35
per person for MGS members, $40 for non-members, and $15 for each
additional immediate family member (residing at the same address!)
attending. This fee pays for the seminar AND a years subscription to
the bimonthly Heritage Quest Magazine (6 issues - a $28 value by
itself). Each family will also receive 3 queries in the magazine. The
total value of the package is over $60.00. Many door prizes will be
given away during the program.
To register by mail, send your check to Mobile Genealogical Society,
P.O. Box 6224, Mobile, AL 36660-6224. Be sure to include the name,
address, phone number and email address of each person attending plus up
to 10 surnames that you are researching. Registrations that are
received by February 6th will have their names and surnames included in
the program booklet.
