Patsy, Marla, and Willie, you all have a common ancestor:

I have put out requests on SMITH's ate Geneva, Dale & Coffee Co. Rootsweb
page.
I am still looking for our Jonathan Julaney SMTIH; he's the one who
married Julia Mary GRAY].
----------
Hi Willie,
I am searching for the Smiths from Coffee and Dale Co.
Could you give me a better idea where PleasantRidge Primitive Baptist
Church, in Coffee Co. is located. Is it in Enterprise?
I checked out that book you mentioned from Lavinia Helms. All I found was a
one line statement mentioning Elder, J. J. Smith but it didn't give me any
clues. Do you have any other info on the Smiths.
This is what I have on him:
Jonathan Julaney/Jelany "Jonnie" SMITH, was born 31 Jan 1867 in Daleville,
Dale Co., AL., possibly son of J.J. Smith and D.K. Jonathan had a brother
named Tommy SMITH and a sister (possibly his half-sister) named Sarah
JENNINGS.
During Jonathan's childhood, his family moved to Coffee Co., AL and became
members of Consolation Primitive Baptist Church, where he continued to
attend in his young adult life; he became a messenger in 1892. He was
listed in the 1900 Enterprise, Coffee Co, AL Census.
He was ordained Oct 1908, at Cool Springs Primitive Baptist Church, De Soto
Parrish, LA. He later served at Mt. Carmel, Goshen, Mt. Moriah, Bethlehem,
Mt. Gilead, Ephesus, and New Hope Primitive Baptist Churches. A 1948 Geneva
Reaper newspaper article showed Jonathan as the third preacher for Ephesus
Primitive Baptist Church, Geneva Co, AL
Jonathan Julaney SMITH married Julia Mary Gray, daughter of James P. GRAY
and Georgia A. RAMSEY, on 16 Dec 1890, either in Geneva or Coffee Co., AL.
Julia's parents, James and Georgia, moved from Lee to Geneva County, AL in
the 1880's, where they homesteaded a farm. The farm was located 2 miles
southeast of Coffee Springs, on Hwy 27, on the westside of the highway.
Julia GRAY's mother, Georgia later married a Mr. Hood, who mistreated her
and her children. Shortly after they married Georgia died, leaving behind
her orphans, who were scattered out. Julia took in her siblings, Tommy and
Viola (they're listed in the 1900 Coffee Co, AL Census, under Jonathan and
Julia Smith's household). Mitchell was adopted by George LEDDON and Mary
GRAY, daughter of Joseph GRAY and Mary HOLLAND but according to Mitchell's
daughter Merle (GRAY) WARD, he was raised by the POWELL family in Geneva .
Mattie went to live as a servant for the BRAZILE family in Geneva. We don't
know what happened to Hattie or Susanna. Nor have we been able to find out
where James P. and Georgia A. GRAY are buried.
Do you spot anything from this info. I sure could use any help on the SMITH
family. Thanks Willie.

Hi Gail,
Happy to hear from you.
John Smith is such an unusual name to research, huh? <grin> Anyone who is
researching John Smith is to be pityed.
I have a John K. and a John W. and a Mrs Smith in the Coffee Baptist
association (that includes some of Dale) but not Geneva County.
I do have an Elder, J. J. Smith, who was elected to be pastor of Pleasant
Ridge Primitive Baptist Church, in Coffee County, on August 17, 1918. The
date fits.
That information comes from a book called; "Church Records of Southeast
Alabama, Book 1" by Lavinia Jordan Helms. She has a few copies left for sale
if you know someone who wants a great reference book. If she sells out this
book she may produce a second book with more information in it.
Pleasant Ridge Primitive Baptist Church sits in the most beautiful part of
Coffee County on a high ridge overlooking much of Coffee County. At night
the lights of all the cities of Enterprise, Ft. Rucker, Elba, and New
Brockton can be seen in the distance.
Many of my ancestors lie there.
Peace and Grace;
Willie

Hi Ana,
Sorry to be so slow answering but I have had some little problems with
arthritis and am on the hunt and peck procedure.
My Smith question is about a Smith who lived in the Eanon area of Coffee
county just before the war, "WBTS". He married Redonia Butts and then she
was a widow in 1870 so I think he died in the "War". I can't find anyone
that matches that information. I have other Smith kin in William Tillman
Smith that married, Emma Wood, the eldest daughter of Samuel Green Wood and
Missouri Kyser. Emma was the sister of my grgrandma, Ida Wood Butts. Bryan
Smith was Wm. T.'s father and Lucy Jane Pittman was his mother. Lucy Jane
was the sister of my grgrgrandmother, Malildie "Mary" Pittman who married
Edward D Butts. All these folks were in the Adair and New Hope area of
Coffee County from 1855 on. Most are buried at New Hope Baptist Church.
Missouri Kyser Wood was the daughter of Christopher Hilliard Kyser and
Nancy Cole who was the daughter of Thomas Delorum Cole. Tommie was in Coffee
County as early as the late 1820s when it was still Dade County. He is the
one I was referring to who in my question about including in the Dale book.
I am also writting in the Dade County book small sketches on my Maddox and
Butts families. They lived in the area around Rocky Head and Ariton and
Ozark mostly after 1900.
So my unknown Smith married Redonia Butts and died before 1870, probably
in the WBTS. He was possibly related to Bryan Smith but I can't connect them
cause I don't know his name. Marla Dooley is also related to Bryan Smith and
she can't help me either.
