It should be interesting, Jeanette. My kids and I got interested in the
Hunley because it just so happened that they showed the movie about the
Hunley on television at the time we were in Mobile on a trip; the Hunley (I
believe) was actually built in Mobile and they have a full size replica of
it behind the Historical Society there. Then, a few months later we saw a
large exhibit on the Hunley at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia.
The conception of the Hunley was absolutely ingenious, and the fact that the
thing worked at all, much less that it was even militarily successful at
sinking a Union ship, is amazing. But those were some incredibly brave men
to get into that contraption.
