I figured out a very interesting thing to do on Duke Vickery's terrific site
at:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Bluffs/3010/alabama.html
that someone else might find enlightening.
Go to Duke's listings of the land ownership listings for the various
counties; go to the listing for one of your ancestors. Highlight the
township, range, and section for you ancestor, and under "edit" on the
toolbar, click on copy.
Then, pull down the "find in page" function on your browser. Click in the
find: window of your browser, then right click and "paste". Then hit
"search".
What this will produce is all the people who owned land (and presumably
lived) in the same section as your ancestor. Other "next door" neighbors can
be found by running the search subtracting one or adding one to the section
number.
My search produced some surprising results of ancestors that I didn't expect
to have any relationship to each other for another generation or two.
