My Family like many of the Civil War period came down to the bay to make
salt to sell since it was the only way you could cure food. A story in the
family is about a yankee raid into the Walton county area and one of my
great great Aunts saved the day by burying the salt to hide it from them.
Interesting also, the only other article she hide was a feather bed that had
been given to her for her hope chest. Here in Bay County there were fires
burning 24/7 making salt. Examples of the kettles used are on display in
several places. The union ship Roebuck made several raids trying to do away
with the salt making industry but was unsuccessful. The St Andrew skirmish
was fought over the same thing.
