Steve, I can't help with the first part of your question but I did order land
files on two of my ancestors. The customer service rep at BLM in
Springfield, VA told me sometime the files have all kinds of info and
sometimes not. One of mine said nothing more than the first and last name
and how much they paid. The second one offered a little more and had
wittnesses listed. There was a description of the dwelling, info on how long
the land had been occupied and cost. I was hoping for a middle name but I
didn't get that. I did find out that the person I was researching couldn't
read or write. The documents were signed with an 'X' and it was witnessed by
the clerk. The more info you can offer to the National Archives (land grant
number, date, name) the faster you will receive an answer. After having said
that, it took six weeks to get an answer. Yes it is worth it you never know
what tidbit of info you will get. Linda
