Lawrence, the response you had this afternoon from Homer was typically
right on the mark. The 15th Alabama must have spent most of July 3
working their way up Big Round Top. Having seen the movie Gettysburg, I
too had formed a vision of the 20th Maine. Alas from the mapping the
20th was back at Corps Headquarters in Barnes Division just north of
Little Round Top at the southern end of Cemetery Ridge. Certainly these
folks were re-deployed and moved around as the battle progressed. Barnes
is shown as the Union Division Commander on the 3rd for the troops
defending the Big Round Top from the Alabama boys. Reading Union units
south to north from Big Round Top are 15 PA reserves, 11PA reserves, 1st
MI, 118th PA, 9th MA, 10th PA reserves, 9th PA reserves, 18th MA, 22 MA
140th NY, 91st PA, 146 NY and 155 PA. The map showing positions for late
afternoon July 2, shows no Union units on Big Round Top. Hood's
Confederate Army including particularly Benning's, Law's and Robertson's
brigades were poised in line directed at Big Round Top, again the
southern most part of the Confederate line. Law and Robertson then
dispersed prior to July 3 battle with Law at the south and Roberton's
Texas troops just to the north. The rest of Hood's army was to the north
further still including Semmes, Wofford, Anderson and Benning. All these
folks had "benefit" of tree cover and at least missed the slaughter that
rewarded those in the open fields attacking Cemetery Ridge. Someone
posted a url link a few days ago that apparently was a source for map
purchases, but I failed to record it. All I have is the address on the
maps which is Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg 1998, P.O. Box
4622, Gettysburg, PA 17325 Good luck.
