Co H of the 39th was organized at
Louisville, Barbour County May 8, 1862
under the command of Capt Whitefield
Clark; appointed Maj May 14, 1862,
replaced by Capt Joseph C. Clayton,
promoted to capt that same date; the
organization of the rgt was completed
at Opelika May 15, 1862; Capt Clayton
was wounded at Murphreesboro Dec 31,
1862 and d. nearby Jan 15, 1863; he
was replaced by 1st Lt, promoted to
Capt, John L. McRae who served in
that capacity until captured and paroled
at Macon Apr 20, 1865; since the 39th
was not paroled until May 1, 1865 in
NC and then as a part of the 22d Ala,
there surely would have been another
company commander, but I have no
idea who that would have been; if
memory serves, Capt Clayton was a
brother of Col Henry D. Clayton who
commanded the 39th and later served
as Maj Genl, Army of Tennessee.

These are the entries I find at Natl
Archives and sorry, have nothing
further to offer:

William Soloman, Pvt, Co B, 1st Ala Inf.

Wm L. Solomon, Pvt, Co H, 18th Ala Inf.

William L. Solomon, Pvt, Co H, 39th Ala
Inf.

William and William L. could very well
be the same soldier.

I do not find any record of a James or
Joseph Johnson serving in the 39th Ala.

Deo Vindice,

Homer T.
