Sounds as if your antivirus program shut you down. that email was probably infected.
Just a couple of days ago, I opened an email from a friend and my Personal Firewall Program shut me down. I didn't lose anything. I am glad I was not working on anything as it would have been lost. I am just happy it shut me down and it did not kill my computer!!
Sounds as if also that that email may have infected all those other emails before it was caught.
Good luck and sorry you lost all those emails.
