To be honest with you, Mary Ann,
I am still trying to verify whether or not this is my Henry Jones and
whether or not Frank
and Adeline are 'my' Henry Jones' respective father and mother...once I have
that in hand, then I can proceed to the 1860 Slave Census...if that census
can truly verify these individuals...

Claiborne, according to Place Names in Alabama (Virginia O. Foscue), is
"Community with discontinued PO at 313224NO873056W is Monroe Co. The
settlement grew up around the fort built in 1813 on a bluff overlooking the
Alaabma River to serve as a military and supply post for troops under the
command of Ferdinand L. Claiborne, general of the MS militia sent to fight
the hostile Creek Indians. Served as Co. seat, 1815-1832. PO est. in
1831."
That entry is followed by "Claiborne Lake - Artificial lake formed by the
impoundment of the Alabama River by Claiborne Lock and Dam at
313653NO873308W in 1968. Named for the miliary fort and supply depot that
was located a few miles to the south in Monroe Co."
A modern map of Alabama should show Claiborne Lake, which will give you a
good idea where the fort/community was.
As for how he got to Alabama.... Your guess is as good as mine, but since he
was born in Virginia, his parents were born in Virginia, and his wife's
parents were born in Virginia, their owner(s) moving to Alabama from
Virginia is probably a pretty good guess. Have you been able to find Frank
and Adeline on any earlier census? How about the 1860 slave census?
Keep us posted on your search!
Mary Ann
