Mrs. Anderson,
I am satisfied due to the fact that we "both" were persistent in this quest
for over a year...and I am also fortunate to have the assistance of
countless others, most of whom I'll never meet, who gave me suggestions as
to how to proceed and where to go for information...and I hope my search was
helpful to everyone else who read the correspondences...and, along the way,
I learned a lot about Alabama history too...a whole Hell of a lot...
But now that I have these names, where do I go from here? I mean...what is
the next move?
Genealogy requires that we go back as far as we can...is this truly as far
back as I can go...or is my quest really just beginning?
I guess now I have to identify the previous owner of these ex-slaves...and
that is extremely difficult...beyond extremely...and, according to previous
emails you sent me, there were various "planters" named Jones in and around
Butler, Conecuh, Wilcox, Monroe and Dallas counties...
I guess I now have to "look" for a slave named Hiram Jones...
I tell you my work is never done...
Steve
P.S.
I have included, again, the names that the Historical Society gave me from
page 342...
"On page 342 of the 1870 Census for Butler County Greenville P.O. Federal
Population Schedule AL Federal Census Index AL115139604, she found the
following household with inclusive names and ages:
Hiram Jones, age 35
Seely Jones, age 30
Julia Jones, age 12
Henry Jones, age 10
James Jones, age 2
Hiram Jones is my great great great grandfather!!!
This is also the same Henry Jones from the marriage certificate for Henry
Jones and Laura Palmore from December 30th 1884/Jan 1, 1885. Henry Jones
claimed he was 21 at the time and Laura Palmore claimed she was 18 at the
time. They were married over at Mary Palmore's (or Palmer's) place by a
reverend by the name of Moses Sales (or Seales)."
