Hi Irma,
I have looked through some of the Selma records and suspect the e might have
been dropped from the Murphey. I am not sure tho.
My John H. Murphey was the only son of Lucretia Murphey who never remarried,
or perhaps never married in the first place. She owned a farm south of
Selma (from a federal grant) and her son owned a farm just east of Selma.
Between 1830 and 1840 they both sold their land. John H. moved to
Mississippi where he contiued farming, his sons getting land grants.
There was a John Murphey living west of Selma, a wealthy farmer with slaves
who was involved in politics. I think his son was named John H.
Finally there is an Edward Murphey who lived in Selma. He donated land to
the Methodist church there.
I think your lawyer was probably the son of one of these two men.
My problem is that I know that my John H. had relatives who remained in the
Selma area as he sent his daughter back when she got into difficulties with
a man. However, the Murpheys there seem out of his class.
