Mrs. Mary McEachern and Mrs. H.M. Howle visited Mrs. A.B. Thrower on Sunday.

Mrs. T.E. Laminack and son Harvy visited J.D. Laminack on Sunday.

There was a corn shucking at Mr. Enoch Owens on Saturday night.

EDWARDSVILLE News

Last Sunday, Nov. 2nd, Miss Marie Carnes and Mr. I.M. Holder put on their best
Sunday go-to-meeting clothes and started off in the direction of the Sunday
school but when they got as far as Central Avenue they turned down it to the
Southern depot and boarded Train No. 40 for Tallapoosa where they were met by
Rev. J.H. Dunn and quickly married, after which they went on to Rome, GA for a
wedding trip. They are now at home. This was a surprize to their many
friends and their parents.

Last Tuesday morning, Mr. Willie Burchfield and Mrs. Annie Roberts went to
Anniston to Barnum & Bailey show and while there, decided to get married so
they came home as one. We extend to them our congratulations.

LOCAL News

Lander Ligon of Vienna, Georgia, a former Heflin boy, visited relatives and
friends in town the first of the week.

Hugh Gibbs and family left here on Sunday for Bowdon where he will be employed
at the Bowdon Drug Co.

Sam Waits of Borden Springs, a prominent citizen of this county was a Heflin
visitor on Monday.

ABERNATHY News

On the 23rd of this month Mr. Walter Buttram and Miss Izora Deese were married
at the home of the bride.

We regret to note the illness of Mr. Newman Pounds. Specialists say that he is
in the last stages of Bright's Disease and is dangerously ill. We all regret
his illness. Pray for his recovery.

James Harris and William Clayton have been on the sick list but are improving.

ERVIN POPE MAY HANG ON DEC. 12th; Appeal Again Taken to Supreme Court

Ervin Pope was brought before Judge Thomas W. Coleman Monday to hear his
sentence for the murder of J.B. McClurkin. The jury which heard the evidence
in the fifth trial found him guilty and returned a verdict last Friday morning
fixing his punishment at death. Unless the sentence is suspended to await the
decision of the higher court, Pope will he hung int he jail yard on Friday,
December 12th, that being the date set by Judge Coleman for the execution.

Pope is one of the most remarkable prisoners the officials of Calhoun County
have ever dealt with. Accused of having brutally murdered one of the leading
citizens of the county, and having been give times sentenced to die for the
crime, he stoutly denies that he had anything to do with the murder and shows
no more concern over the fact that he will probably be hanged than if he was
merely a spectator instead of the one whose life the state demands. The

Mrs. J.V. Terry received a message last Monday calling her to the bedside of
her sister at Steveson, Ala. She left at once on the train.

PROMINENT CITIZEN PASSES AWAY NOV. 13th

N.R. Pounds, one of Cleburne's well known and much loved citizens, passed to
the great beyond on Thursday afternoon at his home and was laid to rest in the
cemetery at Antioch on Saturday at 11 a.m. He was born and reared near
Hopewell and lived near the place of his birth at his death. He was a useful
citizen in the community in which he lived. His many friends and The News
sympathize with the bereaved family and relatives.

The singing at Pine Hill last Sunday p.m. was just fine. Each one seemed to
enjoy it very much.

W.W. Finley, president of the Southern Railroad died suddenly of paralysis
this afternoon. He succeeded Samuel Spencer and was regarded as one of the
leading officials in the county.
