According to the Bible of James OATES and Sarah FELLOW Stephenson and Pharibia OATES son Carraway was born 1804 in Darlington Dist. SC. He married Catherine Skinner in South Carolina in the 1830's. He died in Polk County Texas October 1861. The Carraway you mentioned could have been the son of Joseph OATES Jr. This Carraway is listed on Balden County North Carolina Tax Digest for 1768, 1774-1784. See Willliam Bird III's Bladen County North Carolina Tax Digest Vol. I 1768-1774, Vol. II 1774-1784.
