Elia and Elisha were sons of David Blankinship and Nancy Coxwell. David must have died about 1849 in GA or AL; Nancy married William Peebles and had a son by him. I have more on this family. E-mail me privately at for more info. What's your line down from Elisha?

Blankenship, Co. A, 17th Ala Inf. C.S.A. (no dates).

Known as "Doc" because he was a "home-made" veterinarian.

Eli joined the Confederate Army in October, 1862 at Mobile, Alabama. He was a
private in Company A, 17th Alabama volunteers. Wounded at the battle of
Atlanta, Georgia on 28 July 1864 and furloughed for 60 days. Returned in 90
days and captured in the battle of Nashville, Tennessee, Jan 1865. Remained in
prison at Camp Douglas, IL, 28 January 1865 until paroled 23 June 1865. During
the time that he was in service; he also practiced his veterinarian skills.

1880 census - Cureton's Beat #7, Henry Co. AL, ED 83, p. 30, 21 June. 129/129.
Elly Blankenship, wife Elvina, children David, Emilene, Jeferson, Wily, Altha
and Polly 20 (dau). Farmer.

1900 census - Pct. 15, Levin, Henry Co. AL, ED 97, p. 9, 1 June. 173/174. Eli
Blankinship, wife Elvina, servant Polly Whitley (single, born Mar 1860) and
grandchildren John and Mary Mathison. Farmer; owned farm free.

1910 census - Pct. 9 Reynolds, Henry Co. AL, ED 124, p. 2, 5 May. Eli
Blakenship, wife Matildia, daughter Polly (?), grandchildren John and Mary
Mathison. No occupation; rents farm. Apparently, his grandson John was running
the farm. Living on the Clopton Rd.

- born Sept. 18, 1839, died June 14, 1922. Cemetery located between Bertha and
Clopton in Dale Co.

Elisha enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army on 13 March 1862 at
Clopton, Alabama, in the 33rd Alabama, Company D, until April 1865. His
application for a military pension indicates he joined 20 March 1862.
Forloughed at Columbus, GA, he never returned to the war.
