Yes, it is a large cemetery, one acre, deeded by Joshua. I knew
Madeline Riley very well and she made sure the cemetery was kept in
good shape. A Col. Lisenby left money in trust to take care of the
cemetery. The farmer that farmed around the cemetery tried to take over
part of it and Madeline took him to court. It took a long time but the
case was finally heard and Madeline won. The judge said if it was an
acre when it was deeded it still was an acre. My husband and I donated
money for the fence along with several other people so Madeline was
able to fence the property. Madeline said that the farmer had moved
some of the stones so those graves were lost. I loved to hear
Madeline's stories of long ago. When in Dothan we always tried to visit
her but the last time we were there she was not home. We learned later
she more than likely was in hospital. We were very sadden to learn of
her death.
By the way, how do you know Daniel Wiggins is buried there? We have
never been able to find out for sure. The family placed a stone for him
and his wife at Wiggins Cemetery at Mt Pleasant Baptist Church in 1995.
We attended the ceremony. I descend from his son, Stephen Wiggins and
wife Jane Woodham Lisenby Wiggins.
