I was reading Mr. Caver's generous posting of death notices and noticed the
reference to "the prairies" in one of the obits (for FITZPATRICK.) I have run
across notes referring to "the prairies" in early Alabama histories numerous
times and wondered exactly where the prairies were located. I assumed they
must have been south of Montgomery and perhaps in adjoining portions of Macon
County and maybe even Pike County. Some of my ancestors from Macon County are
buried in a small family cemetery off Pike Road, below Montgomery. We have no
connections to the family whose land they are buried on. I was told the reason
they were buried there may have been because they lived "down on the
prairies" and in the winter the ground was so frozen and hard they could not bury on
it. Does anyone know where the prairies were actually located?
Thanks!
Evelyn Leslie
