Jim Chesser and William Wingard both wanted the same section of land near Shady
Grove and they were not able to decide which one of them should claim the land.
Finally they agreed to run a race to Cahawaba to determine who should get the
land. Jim Cresser went by horseback but Wingard travled on foot, swimming the
streams. He got to Cahawba first and put in his claim for the land. Then he
returned to the Cahawba River, built a campfire and waited there for the arrival
of Jim Chesser.
Hope this is a help to someone. I am not related to these folks.
