CIRCUIT COURT CASES
Wedowee, Sept. 2nd
State vs. Sam Bowen Sr., charged with attempt to murder, sentenced to 4
years. Entered an appeal with appeals court and placed under $1200. bond.
State vs. Cora Emory, charged with vagrancy, sentenced to 12 months hard labor.
State vs. A.J. Gore, charged with petit larceny, fined $5. and sentenced to 60
days hard labor.
State vs. Ed Lane, charged with murder in 2nd degree, sentenced to 1 year and
1 day.
State vs. Frank Wood, charged with murder in 1st degree, sentenced to 20 years.
State vs. John Henry Bailey, charged with murder in 1st degree, plead guilty
and given 20 years.
State vs. Jack Wood, charged with murder in 1st degree, sentenced to 15 years.
State vs. Minnie Belle Pike, charged with vagrancy, sentenced to 12 months
hard labor.
State vs. George Shaw, charged with violating prohibition laws, fined $150.
and sentenced to hard labor for 8 months.
State vs. Mary Irvin, charged with vagrancy, sentenced to 12 months of hard
labor.
State vs. Bob Edwards, charged with violating prohibition laws, fined $50 and
sentenced to hard labor for 4 months.

J.P. Snuggs and wife left yesterday to spend ten days with the former's
brother in Geneva county.

Rowland Burgess and Mrs. Mattie Prophit were married at the home of G.W.
Burgess in Roanoke on Sept. 1st. The wedding was a quiet home affair, only a
few relatives and friends present. The ceremony was performed by Rev. S.L.
Dobbs.

Rev. A.J. Gross of Randolph County, Ala. is spending a few days with his
cousin Mrs. J.W. Ray and is rendering valuable assistance in the protracted
services at the Baptist church. The Franklin News & Banner.

Miss Effie Mostello returned yesterday to her home near Wedowee after a visit
to her cousin Mrs. W.T. Orr.
---
Linton Bevis died at Bremen, Georgia last Thursday, after a long illness,
leaving a wife and two children. His remains were interred at Greenville,
Georgia. L.A. Bevis, a brother of the deceased, accompanied by his daughter
Miss Juliabelle and son Frank, attended the funeral.

HAPPY MARRIAGE SUNDAY OF JOHN CEPHAS TAYLOR TO MISS MITTIE IRMA CASWELL
The home of Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Caswell at Lime community was the scene Sunday
afternoon of a happy marriage when their daughter Miss Mittie Irma Caswell was
married to Mr. John Cephas Taylor. The wedding march was played by Mrs. A.C.
Crockett while little Misses Caswell and Whitley were flower girls. Rev. G.M.
Bynum was the officiating minister. After the ceremony the bridal pair
repaired to the home of the groom's parents where they are staying for present.

Ambus Shaw and Miss Dollie Moses and Jim Arrington and Miss Vera Hood went
over to Georgia last Sunday and were united in marriage, W.E. Davis, Esq.
performing the ceremony.

Sept. 6th
Jeff Barton was hauling logs to the sawmill on Monday when one very large one
rolled off the dray and passed over him from feet to head. He was considerably
bruised and skinned but no bones broken. Had he not been a regular giant he
would have been crushed to death.

Charley Bailey was happily wedded to Miss Martha Adams last Saturday. Esq.
Bowen officiated.

Sept. 9th
Rev. T. Carlton is at his father's home very ill. He has recently returned
from Kentucky where he has spent the summer preaching.

Virgil Carlton and Miss Vicie Wood drove over to Wedowee a few days ago and
were married.

Sept. 16th
Will Johnson who was living near Omaha had the misfortune to lose his dwelling
house and contents by fire last Friday night.

Herman, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Head, passed to his reward
Wednesday night, after a short illness of typhoid fever. The deceased was just
entering into manhood, being nineteen years old. He was a model young mah and
his sad demise is lamented by all. Funeral services were conducted by Elders
Daniel Joiner and J.M. Yates at Lebanon on Thursday afternoon in the presence
of a large congregation. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones. We are
sorry to note that Mrs. Head's health is worse since the death of her son and
she is not expected to live long.

Mrs. Fannie Andrews returned to her home in Union Springs on Friday.

W.A. Nabors and family of Winnsboro, Texas are the guests of the family of
Rev. F.H. Farrington, the former and the latter being half- brothers.

Mrs. P.C. Hammond and children of Humble, Texas arrived Friday to spend some
months with the former's father W.W. Cofield.

Mrs. G.W. Stevens and daughter Mrs. Ross attended a family reunion at Mrs. Tom
Blake's on Sunday, the occasion being the homecoming of her daughter Mrs.
Alice Blake Hilton who has been absent 27 years in Louisiana. Many relatives
and frieds were present and dinner was served beneath the trees.

TWO AGED CITIZENS DIE
Sunday morning, Dr. J.L. Vineyard died suddenly at his home in Rock Mills. Had
he lived till yesterday he would have been 85 years of age. He was probably
the oldest living physician in Alabama and was a long time resident of this
county. He was a member of the Methodist church and for many years a
minister. He had the esteem of all who knew him. Funeral services were
conducted from the Methodist church in Rock Mills Monday afternoon by Rev.
G.M. Bynum in the presence of a large congregation. The interment was by the
Masons.

At an early hour yesterday morning Mrs. Betsy Ann Henderson died at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Thornton D. Taylor, six miles southeast of Wedowee. She
was about 80 years old and had been in feeble health for several years. She
was the mother of Mr. J.C. Hornsby, one of Roanoke's best citizens. She was a
faithful christian and a member of the Methodist church. The interment will
be at Union HIll after services at 10 o'clock this morning, conducted by Rev.
S.L. Dobbs.

Invitations were received yesterday to the marriage of Miss Nelle Curtis Floyd
to Mr. William David Bagley, the ceremony to occur at the former's home at one
o'clock Tuesday Oct. 8th.

Mrs. A.E. Moody and Mrs. W.C. Stokes have returned to their home in Norfolk,
Va., after a visit to the family of J.W. Ray.

G.B. Heflin who has been spending some time with his sister Mrs. L.F.
Birdsong, and other relatives in this county, left yesterday on the return to
his home in New Mexico.

W.W. Mangley has returned to Devol, Oklahoma to make that place his home for a
while.

Sept. 23rd
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Will Hearn on the 22nd, a son.

J.F. Anderson, our efficient Depot agent, will leave with his family for
Atmore on Thursday. Mr. Anderson is resigning the railroad work to go into the
mercantile business. We regret very much to give up this good family. He will
be especially missed in the Baptist church where he was an active leader in
all church affairs.

Clyde Kilgore of LaGrange visited relatives here on Sunday.

Andrew Gay who has been in the medical college in Chicago is at home on a
visit. He has one more year in college.

Curtis Liles will leave this week to enter dental college in Atlanta.

Mrs. Lizzie Kitchens of Double Head came over Friday to visit relatives and to
be at the Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Poke Vickers of New Site has purchased the house and lot of Mr. Ogle on
Ashland avenue and will move to Wadley the first of November.

Rev. Mr. Cowan of Jackson, Ala., recently visited his sister Mrs. Fred
Anderson.

Sept. 23rd
W.L. Cantrell of Potash, lost his barn by fire last Friday night with about
twenty-five hundred bundles of fodder.

BACON LEVEL News
Sept. 23rd
Dink Ussery and Miss Ada Henry surprised their friends last Tuesday evening
when they drove down to Evansville and were married.

Mrs. Dickson of Abbotts Ford has returned after spending several days with her
daughter Mrs. D.L. Bishop.
