MARRIED YESTERDAY

At noon yesterday, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Pittman, several miles
north of town, their daughter Miss Dessa was married to Mr. John Simpson
Burdette. Rev. J.S. Robertson officiated.

ANOTHER LIQUOR CASE

John Grant, the alleged operator of a still near town that was raided by the
police several weeks ago, was captured last week and placed under bond. When
the time of trial arrived Grant was not there, however, he came in Sunday to
stand trial. He plead guilty and Mayor Mann gave him a sentence of $99., five
months and 29 days.

DEATH OF A MOTHER

We wish to thank the good people of this community for their untiring aid and
assistance in the sickness and death of our mother, Mrs. Martha Harmon, who
passed away on the morning of January 24, 1913. May God's richest blessings
attend you all of your days.

Mother was born in April 1833. She was a true and faithful member of the
Primitive Baptist church and has been ever since July 1884. She was baptized
at Zion's Rest by Elder W.R. Avery. She now sleeps beside our father in the
cemetery at Zion's Rest. Father passed away January 14, 1887. Mother leaves
two sons and a number of grandchildren to mourn her death. H.M. Harmon.

W.L. STEWART DEAD

The funeral services of Mr. Wilson L. Stewart were conducted last Thursday at
Concord, in the presence of many friends and relatives. This popular and
prominent citizen died in Tuscaloosa where he had gone for treatment, his
health having failed many months before. He leaves a wife and one daughter.

MALONE News
Feb. 3rd

Gladys, the daughter of W.W.L. Stone, was badly burned Sunday morning. While
standing before the fire with her back to the fire, her clothing ignited. Her
mother and sister Dora burned their hands badly trying to extinguish the
flames.

Mrs. Owens and family spent Wednesday night with Mrs. Owen's sister, Mrs.
Knight. They were moving to Winston County.

Pate Mayfield of Birmingham was called to Roanoke last week by the illness of
his father.

The Leader regrets to note that Mr. W.S. Mayfield continues critically ill.

Mrs. C.W. Pace and daughter Miss Cynthia are visiting Howard Pace in New
Orleans and attending Mardi Gras.

Jack W. Mickle of Fort Worth, Texas will return to his home this week after a
pleasant visit to relatives and old friends in Roanoke and vicinity, after an
absence of twenty-seven years.
---

Mrs. Albert Finley returned to her home in Georgia after a visit to relatives
in Roanoke.
---

Glover Jackson of Sardis, Miss., is visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
F.M. Adams.

WADLEY News
Feb. 3rd

The remains of Mr. Wils Stewart were brought here last Wednesday night from
the hospital at Tuscaloosa where he died. He was buried at Concord on
Thursday. He leaves a wife and daughter and a host of relatives and friends.

Mrs. Lee of Double Head passed through Wadley on Saturday to visit her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Pearson, two miles from town, who are in very
feeble health.

departed father Mr. W.S. Mayfield, we offer our friends and neighbors this
inadequate expression of our gratitude. We should especially mention Drs.
Stevenson and Disharoon and Mr. F.P. Nichols. Sincerely, the children of the
deceased.

W. S. MAYFIELD GONE TO REST; AGED CITIZEN PASSED AWAY SUNDAY; BURIED AT BACON
LEVEL

After an illness of four weeks, Mr. William S. Mayfield passed away Sunday at
noon at the home of his daughter Mrs. W.W. Pittman, in Roanoke. The remains
were taken Monday to Fellowship church at Bacon Level of which the deceased
was a member, and were interred with Masonic honors, after religious services
conducted by Revs. F.H. Farrington and E.M. Glenn.

Mr. Mayfield lacked only a few months of being 80 years of age and his long
life had been spent in this section. He had been a resident of Roanoke 25
years. During the War between the States he served with honor. He was a
quiet, unassuming but appreciative man, a gentleman of the old school.

Having fought well the battles of life, he leaves a good name to his children
and has entered upon his reward. In his passing Roanoke loses another honored
citizen, whose life served to connect the heroic past with the restless,
changeful present.

Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Mayfield arrived from Texas on Saturday, called here by the
fatal illness of the former's father.

AGED LADY DEAD

Mrs. Elizabeth Hill died last Thursday in the western part of the county at
the advanced age of 77 years. The interment was at Darien church. Her
surviving children are Mrs. L.C. Spratlin of Seattle, Washington and Mesdames
J.W. and T.F. Willingham of this county. Many friends also mourn her death.

Wils Knight and Miss Ruby Dunson of the Corinth community, were married one
day last week.

David Holliday and family moved to Shawmut where they will make their future
home.

Feb. 10th

Mrs. Alva York and children of Birmingham were guests of Mrs. Robert Harris,
Saturday and Sunday.

On last Sunday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Sallie Wood, her eldest daughter
Miss Mary was united in marriage to Mr. Will Shivers. Rev. G.G. Smith
officiated.
---

Miss Golden Jones of Colquit, Ga., who has been visiting here, was called home
Sunday by the death of her grandfather.
---

DEATH OF MRS. POWER

Mrs. Charles R. Power died at two o'clock this morning at her home in this
place, after a long illness. She was 65 years old and is survived by her
husband, two sons and a daughter. The funeral of this good woman will be
conducted from the Baptist church at 10 o'clock tomorrow.

REWARD

A liberal reward for information that leads to location of M.M. Brabston. Was
last heard from in Roanoke in May 1912. He is 21 years old, about 5 feet 11
inches tall and weighs about 135 pounds. Address his father. W.F. Brabston,

Feb. 17th

Mrs. Hiram Welch is spending a few days with her daughter Mrs. J.T. Pool at
Dickert. The baby of the latter has been very sick.

On last Tuesday at one o'clock, Master J. Hearn, son of Mrs. Ola Hearn,
died. While his death had been expected for several weeks, he will be greatly
missed in the home where he lived such a bright life. He was ten years old and
had been an invalid for the past three years. May God's richest blessings rest
upon his brother and widowed mother.

Jim Motley of Birmingham and Bud Motley of Auburn and Dr. and Mrs. C.P. Gay of
LIneville attended the funeral here last week of J. Hearn.

Mrs. Laura Davis, who has been visiting relatives here and in Georgia for the
past two weeks, returned to her home in China Springs, Texas yesterday.

RESOLUTONS ON THE DEATH OF I.G. HILL
from The Roanoke Lodge No. 132, A.F. & A.M.

Whereas it has pleased Almighty God in his great wisdom and providence to call
our brother, I.G. Hill from labor to refreshment into his spiritual kingdom on
January 12, 1913 from our midst, be it therefore resolved,

1st; that in the death of brother Hill, our Lodge has lost one of its earnest
and faithful members, his wife a loyal and devoted companion, the children a
kind and loving father, the brothers and sisters an affectionate brother, his
church one of its most faithful members, Roanoke and community one of its best
citizens.

2nd; that we most humbly bow in submission to the will of our Heavenly Father
who doeth all things well.

3rd; that in testimony of our respect to the memory of Bro. I.G. Hill, a copy
of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the Lodge and a copy be
furnished the widow of our deceased brother, also a copy be furnished to the
Roanoke Leader for publication.

Mrs. Allie Kemp, after an extended visit to her daughter Mrs. Thompson, left
last week for her home in Memphis, Tenn.

The Temple, Texas Daily Telegram of Feb. 9th brings the news of the death of
John T. Talley at his home in that place. He went to Temple from this section
in 1870 and has relatives and friends among the older citizens here.

Mrs. H.N. Awbrey is convalescing after a severe illness. Her sister Mrs. Enloe
is with her.
---

Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Allen of Americus are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A.M.
Clemmons this week.

Miss Marion Woodyard arrived yesterday from West Pont with her sister Mrs.
Homer Wilson to remain a few days.
---

Mrs. A. J. Crumpler was the guest of her parents Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Ray this
week.

N.T. Landers and wife arrived Friday from Birmingham to again make Roanoke
their home.

BACON LEVEL News
Feb. 17th

"Uncle" Steve Bishop, an old veteran, died here yesterday at the ripe old age
of eighty-six years and will be buried here today.

"Uncle" Johnny Phillips is visiting his nephew John Phillips near Glenn,
Georgia.
---

Mr. Judson Gamble and wife of Atlanta came Saturday to visit home folks. Mr.
Gamble had the misfortune to get hurt while at work on a railroad train, and
it is feared he will never be able to walk again.
---

Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Crouch of LaGrange were called here by the death of the
latter's father, Mr. Bishop.
---

Julia Green, a colored woman, was drowned Saturday night in the old Trent lake
near her home.

SHERIFF MAKES RAID

Deputy Sheriff C.E. Ford raided a "wild cat" still near High Shoals on Monday
and succeeded in capturing Sam Walker and Cicero Gravett; a third party made
his escape. He also captured the still and landed it in jail to await the

The six month old child of Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Wheeler died Friday at their home
in the Higgins community.

Mrs. H.M. Mickle who has been quite sick for several weeks is convalescing.

Charles Tidwell of Ellerslie, Georgia is visiting his brother J.R. Tidwell.

A daughter was born on Washington's birthday to Mr. and Mrs. Grady Word.

J.T. Sand who has been aiding in the improvements being made at the factory in
Rock Mills, has moved to Roanoke to engage in like work. He has rented the
Ruggles cottage on West Point street. The house has recently been renovated
and improved.

W.A. Smith of Standing Rock spent last week with his brother O.W. Smith.

Rev. F.H. Farrington and family left yesterday for their new home in Monroe,
Louisiana. The best wishes of many friends attend these good people.

Walter Thomas and Miss Inez Alsobrook, prominent young people of Five Points,
were married last Wednesday evening.

Feb. 24th

Mrs. Ida Scarbrough and Mrs. Zema Leath of Mellow Valley were the guests of
their sister Mrs. Liles the week end.

Mrs. Miller of Mellow Valley is visiting her daughter Mrs. Liles.

Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Gay visited the former's sister Mrs. D. Allen in Atlanta
from Friday till Monday.

Mrs. Ola Hearn and Luther spent the weekend as the guests of Mrs. Will Stewart
at Almond.

WEDOWEE News
Feb. 24th

Bro. Cofield was on duty with us Saturday and Sunday. He preached three good
sermons at the Baptist church and one at the Poor Farm, Sunday afternoon.

HAPPY LAND News
Feb. 24th

Mrs. Mary J. Brown who has been sick so long, continues to grow worse. Her
condition is considered critical but not hopeless.
---

Mrs. B. Brown was struck down with an attack of rheumatism last Friday. For a
short time she seemed partially paralyzed. She is improving at this writing.
---

ROCK MILL News
Feb. 24th

The remains of Miss Harry who died Friday at her home near Glenn, Ga., were
interred at Wehadkee on Saturday.
