DEATH OF MRS. THOMAS TATUM

The death of Mrs. Thomas Tatum occurred at her home near Milltown Sunday
morning. She had been an invalid for many years. The funeral was conducted
at 2 o'clock Monday by Rev. E.M. Glenn and the interment was in the family
burying ground. The five sons of the deceased, including Mr. S.H. Tatum of
Roanoke, acted as pallbearers. Besides the five sons and a husband, many
relatives and friends mourn the passing away of this good woman. She was 72
years of age and a life-long member of the Methodist church.

E.W. Hill is quite ill with pneumonia.

Mrs. Carrie Randall was called to Lineville several days ago by the serious
illness of her aged father Mr. H.M. Spikes whose death occurred before she
reached his bedside.

A HOLD UP REPORTED

Howard Sharman reports that while on his way home at 10:30 o'clock last
Thursday night, he was halted by a highwayman who stepped from behind a lamp
post near the Commercial Hotel and relieved him of his watch and 80 cents in
change. In the glare of the arc light, young Sharman saw that his assailant
was a white man, but states that he did not recognize him. Sharman returned
to town, secured friends and policemen with the town dog, and returned to the
scene but no trace of the highwayman could be found. Suspicion rested upon
some hanger-on of the show in town that week. Much indignation was expressed
by the public.

the week end.

Mrs. Gus Mackey of Cragford came Friday to be the guest of her niece Mrs. C.C.
Moultrie.

Mr. and Mrs. Abner Coker will move to Roanoke this week so that Mr. Coker will
be more convenient to his work.

Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Thompson were called to Dudleyville on Sunday by the serious
illness of the latter's aged father Rev. Mr. Ferguson.

March 3rd

Nixon Lucas and son Charlie left Saturday morning for Washington to be present
at the inauguration. They will visit their old home in North Carolina and
other points before their return.

Tom McMurray went over to Ridley, Georgia on Sunday to see his mother who
became seriously ill after arrival there to visit her sister Mrs. W. Ridley.

Mrs. F.C. Power arrived last evening to nurse E.W. Hill in his illness.

Mrs. W.D. Newman leaves this afternoon for Roanoke to visit her son E.P.

Mrs. Harriet Floyd of Opelika and Mrs. Vick Walton of Macon, Georgia were
called here last week by the illness of their brother Mr. H.L. Griffin.

John E., Ben F., and H.L. Griffin Jr. arrived from Texas on Sunday, called by
the serious illness of their venerable father Mr. H.L. Griffin Sr. The
latter's condition is somewhat improved at this writing, we are pleased to
note.

FOR SALE

One nice horse, dark bay, eight years old and weighs about a thousand pounds.
Splendid harness horse and works anywhere. My failing health leaves this horse
more than I can work, therefore I must dispose of him. G.B. Hendon, Roanoke,

Miss Heywood Molton will arrive from Birmingham Friday to spend two weeks with
her aunt, Mrs. Sanders.

F.P. Nichols has purchased of J.W. Ray a half interest in the six acres just
north or back of the public cemetery. They will have this plat cleared,
surveyed and divided into burial plots which will be put on the market at
reasonable prices.

J.H. Sharp who has been in charge of the construction of the new dam at Rock
Mills has come to Roanoke to locate for awhile.
---

Mrs. H.C. McDonald returned to Notasulga Monday after a brief visit to her
sister Mrs. H.N. Awbrey, who is now improving.

Mrs. J.W. Cook of Glenn, Georgia is spending the week with her daughter Mrs.
Olin Wilson.

Clint and Marion Randle attended the funeral of their grandfather in Lineville
on Saturday.
---

Rev. A.S. Brannan has been called to the pastorate of Mt. Pleasant church near
Franklin, Georgia and has agreed to serve that church the ensuing year.

In the Chambers county court this week, among the cases heard were that of
Jno. Todd for violating the prohibition law, three cases, sentenced to 6
months hard labor in each case. The Opelika News

A.L. Truett and family arrived from Columbus last week and expect to make
their home in this vinicity again.

Mrs. M.V. Hudson is quite sick at this writing.

While putting up telephone wire one day last week, Sam Bradshaw, Warner Allen
and Bob Childs were shocked by lightning but not severely. Also while putting
up a barb wire fence, Mr. Duke Gladney was shocked and was in bed for a while
afterward.

"Uncle" Johnnie Phillips is real sick at this writing, we are sorry to note.

D. Allen of Glenn, Georgia visited his father G.W. Allen the first of the week.

CARD OF THANKS

We desire to convey through this medium a sincere expression of our thanks to
the physicians, nurse, neighbors and friends for the many kind ministrations
shown us and our departed loved one in our sore affliction. We can but pray

GREEN BOUND OVER

Will Green, charged with the murder of O.D. Kitchens on last Sunday, waived
preliminary hearing yesterday before Judge Frank D. Foley and was bound over
without bail to await the action of the grand jury. Green was represented by
Atttorney T. Hicks Fort who explained that he had not been employed by Green
but he appeared from the standpoint of a friend, having defended him on
numerous occasions in the past. The court room was crowded to overflowing and
several times the aisles had to be opened up to allow witnesses in other cases
to go to the stand. The Columbus Enquirer-Sun, the 14th.

LOSS BY FIRE

Fire discovered at about 6 o'clock this morning burned the two story house of
M.W. Carden and occupied by W.H. Causey and family on north Railroad avenue,
the latter losing all their household goods, clothing, etc. Only a few
matresses and other articles were saved. Mrs. Causey and children barely had
time to get out of the burning home, only partially clothed. They had no
insurance. The Opelika Daily News, the 17th.

REV. V.O. HAWKINS DEAD

Rev. J.S. Robertson yesterday afternoon received a telegram from Lineville
stating that Rev. V.O. Hawkins, pastor of the Methodist church, had died
suddenly. No further details could be learned. Mr. Robertson went to
Lineville on the evening train. Dr. Hawkins was one of the most prominent and
beloved members of the North Alabama Conference. He was twice presiding elder
of this district. Later news is to the effect that the funeral will be held
in Lineville at 10 o'clock on Friday.

Edwin Pirkle has closed his school in Cleburne and it back with us in the High
School.

WADLEY News
March 17th

The wedding bells were ringing in and around Wadley on Sunday. Miss Nora
Carter, daughter of Mr. Jim Carter was married to Mr. C. Amoson. They drove to
Almond and the ceremony was performed by Squire Camp at 2:30 o'clock.

From Pleasant Hill, Miss Bettie Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Harris,
drove to Almond with Mr. Wiley Perry where they were married by Rev. Mr.
Mitchell.

Another marriage was that of Mr. Tom Clegg and Miss Minnie Kennedy of Almond.
That ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Mitchell.

Little Miss Myriam Hood went to Lineville last week to be the guest of her
grandmother Mrs. Barnhill for several months.
---

Rev. C.C. Godbey is confinued to his room by sickness.
---

Master Roy Carlton was considerably bruised and had one arm broken by a
falling tree last Thursday evening.

Emil Zobel, who is building a fine residence for P.B. Tatum at Abanda, was at
home Saturday and Sunday.

Mrs. Homer Wilson was called to West Point last Thursday by the death of her
uncle, Chief of Police John T. Higginbotham.
---

Mrs. A.V. Poyner and sister Miss Alzada Dorman, who have been making their
home in Roanoke for some time, have moved to Lanett.

W.P. Arnett, one of the county's most excellent citizens, died at his home
near Lineville Wednesday night after a lingering illness. His life covered a
period of four score years, more than half of which was spent in Clay county.
He was buried in the LIneville cemetery with Masonic honors. The Ashland

P.D. Wilson of Glenn, Ga., spent last week with his sons in this place.

LOST - - Between Roanoke and Mason, Georgia, black double snap purse
containing about three dollars in silver. Return to Leader office or J.H.

J.E. Hurley of Amarillo, Texas visited R.P. Phelps and family a few days
recently.

George Boddie, a well known negro, was hot in the face by a shotgun in the
hands of another negro at Dickert, Saturday night. The wound is serious.

H.H. Owens reports that his brother A.D. Owens continues in very feeble health.

Phil Bronson has come here from West Point, Ga. He is working in the lumber
business.

NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, March 26, 1913

JOHN J. CLARK DEAD

Mr. John J. Clark, aged 61 years, an old resident of this section, died at his
home at Johnson's Cross Roads at 8 o'clock Monday morning. The remains were
interred at Bethel cemetery at 11 o'clock yesterday. Mr. Clark leaves a wife
and several grown children. He was regarded by his neighbors as an excellent
citizen.

RESOLUTIONS ON THE DEATH OF E.W. HILL
Adopted by Roanoke Lodge No. 96, K. of P., Roanoke, Ala.

Whereas it has pleased Almighty God to remove from our midst, Bro. E.W. Hill,
we most keenly feel his loss, whom we shall see no more on earth, but trust
one day to gather with him around the throne of God.

Resolved, 1st; that we bow in humble submission to the will of the all-wise
Creator, who knoweth and doeth all things well.

Resolved 2nd; that in his death we have lost of our best and most faithful
members; the town and community, a good citizen.

Resolved 3rd; that the members of Roanoke Lodge wear the regular badge of
mourning thirty days.

Resolved 4th; that we tender our heartfelt sympathy to his much beloved
family and point them to the great Chancellor Commander above, wo only can
bind up the broken hearts and make all things whole.

Resolved 5th; that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the family, one to
the Roanoke Leader for publication and one to spread upon our minutes.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. W.J. White in Lowell on Saturday.

C.W. Cunningham boarded the train here yesterday for Newnan to attend the
funeral of the little son of his kinsman, Will Pogue.

Jesse Enloe and Miss Zolemma Rice and Robert Moore and Miss Dillie Jones went
to Georgia and were married last Sunday.

Mrs. C.G. Rodgers is spending this week with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Wyatt
Wood.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Corley on Saturday.

M.D. Thompson and family leave this morning to spend a month with Mrs.
Thompson's mother in Memphis.

A son was born last week to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Moon.

Eulus Carter, colored, was arrested here Monday morning by Mr. J.W. Stewart of
Five Points and placed in jail, charged with selling whiskey at Five Points. A
charge of carrying a concealed weapon was also docketed against him. The

her daughter Mrs. Jesse H. Wallace.
