DAVID MANLEY MET HIS DEATH AT HIS HOME TUESDAY AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF
DECLINING HEALTH

In the death of Mr. David Manley at his home in this place at 2 o'clock
Tuesday afternoon, one of Roanoke's oldest residents and most interesting
characters passed away. He had been in failing health for several years and
the last week or so he declined rapidly, notwithstanding the faithful,
unremitting care of physicians, relatives and friends.

Mr. Manley was born in South Carolina August 1, 1845 and came to Roanoke with
his parents when a child of three or four years, where he has since resided.
At the time of his death he was sixty-eight years, six months and two days of
age. His surviving brothers are H.C. and C.D. Manley of this place, and his
only living sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Atchison, residing near Texarkana. There
are numerous other relatives including many nephews and nieces.

The Manley family has been closely identified with the history of Roanoke, and
in its growth and development, and our deceased friend was an important
factor. He began clerking in a store when a small boy and sold goods for many
years. In all his dealings he was smooth and pleasant and strictly honest.
Notwithstanding he did a noble part by his aged parents and younger brothers
and sisters and he was able to accumulate a comfortable little fortune.

Mr. Manley also bore his part in the building of our churches and schools and
in the support of other worthy causes. He was from early life a member of the
Roanoke Baptist church and was also a Mason. He was a conservative element in
the community, always advising harmony and seeking to promote peace and
neighborly relations. Few men have lived so long in the same community and few
have made more friends.

The funeral services will be conducted at 10 o'clock Thursday morning from the
First Baptist church by Dr. Rucker and the interment will be in Cedarwood
cemetery.

MRS. W.B. RODGERS DEAD

At 4:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon, the gentle spirit of Mrs. W.B. Rodgers
took its flight. Mrs. Rodgers had been desperately ill for several weeks,
nevertheless, her death was a grievous shock to her family and friends. The
deceased was a true woman in all the relations of life. She leaves a husband
and two grown children, besides her aged parents, brothers, sisters and other
relatives. The funeral will be conducted this afternoon at 2:30 from the First
Baptist church of which the deceased was a member, by her pastor, Rev. J.W.
Rucker.

Feb. 2nd

We are sorry to note that Rev. W.R. Avery is critically ill. Dr. Wyatt Avery
of Birmingham, arrived Sunday to visit his father and will carry him to a
hospital if his condition will admit of it.

Mrs. H.D. Cowden is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Wood.

E.P. Rodgers of Columbus and J.F. Parker of West Point were called here last
week by the critical illness of their sister Mrs. W.B. Rodgers.

Dr. DeWitt Faucett returned to Gadsden Monday, being called here by the
illness of his uncle Mr. D. Manley.
---

Dr. Wyatt Avery left Monday morning with his father for Birmingham where the
latter will be placed in an infirmary. The many friends of this good man trust
that he may soon regain his health.
---

It will be pleasing news to our local readers to learn that our friend, Mr.
George E. Lee, is steadily regaining his health at his brother's home north of
town.

Mrs. Emil Zobel is improving after a long illness.
---

J.R. Gross and mother were in town yesterday, returning from a visit to the
former's brother S.C. Gross at Galliver, Florida.
---

Liles, for sympathy and kindness shown us in the sickness and death of our

Feb. 2nd

Mr. Jess Owens died at his home here Monday afternoon after a long illness.
His remains were carried to Wehadkee for burial.

Mrs. Emory Carden of Double Head, spent Saturday and Sunday with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Eichelberger.

LOCAL News

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Eric Alsobrook on the 7th inst. at the home of
Mrs. Alsobrook's parents in Five Points.

Mrs. Mamie Callaway of LaGrange is spending some days with her niece, Mrs.
T.B. Wood.

Mrs. Walter Finney and little son are spending the week with the former's
mother Mrs. Mary Williams.
---

John B. Tatum is a candidate for Sheriff of Chambers county. Mr. Tatum is a
prominent and worthy citizen of our neighboring county and a brother of S.H.
Tatum of this city.

News was received here Saturday by relatives that Mrs. Brown, formerly known
here as Mrs. Diva Mayfield, was buried in Birmingham that day. Her death
occurred in Savannah, Georgia.
---

Mack Manley of Newnan, Dr. G.L. Fausett of Greenville and Mrs. Mack Huffaker
of Ensley were called to Roanoke last week to attend the funeral of Mr. David
Manley.

Dr. W.S. Trent returned Thursday of last week from southern Carroll county
where he had spent several days with Mrs. Trent who has been visiting her
parents, Dr. and Mrs. McAfee. He and Mrs. Trent are to be congratulated on
the recent arrival of a bouncing boy of nine pounds. The Franklin News &
Banner.

Monk Chappell, colored, had his right hand mashed off last Thursday night
while at work at the oil mill.

J.F. Parker of West Point and Mrs. W.R. Thompson of Riderville, Ala., attended
the funeral of Mrs. W.B. Rodgers last Wednesday.

The residence of Mr. George Drummond near Wehadkee was destroyed by fire
Monday afternoon.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wilkins last week, a boy.

Mr. Bunyan Kilgore left last week for Albany, Texas where he has a position
for the coming year.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Perry of Dallas, Texas have come to Wadley to make their
home. Mr. Perry has accepted a position with the Clardy Pharmacy.

IN MEMORIAM OF WILLIAM MONROE JOHNS

William Monroe Johns, senior Warden of Putman Lodge 212, A.F. & A. Masons,
departed this life Dec. 5th 1913. In the death of Bro. Johns, the fraternity
has lost a worthy and faithful member, his wife and children a true and
devoted husband and father, the country a good citizen. Bro. Johns lived at
home and boarded at the same place. He attended to his own business and let
other people's alone. He possessed many traits of fine character. He was
loved by all that knew him. May we all emulate his character. May God bless
his wife and children and help them to meet him in heaven.

NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, February 11, 1914

MRS. H.R. ARNOLD DEAD

Mrs. H.R. Arnold died last Wednesday at her home three miles north of town and
was buried at Zion's Rest the following day. She was 73 years of age and had
been a member of the Methodist church since 1859. All her children, as well
as her husband, preceded her to the grave.

extended to Mrs. H.R. Arnold in her last days and upon the occasion of her
death and funeral. Respectfully, her grandchildren.

Rev. J.T. Wilkins, formerly Methodist pastor at Five Points, died suddenly in
Talladega yesterday.

kindnesses that were extended to our now deceased kinsman, Mr. David Manley,
during the long period of his physical debility through which he suffered
before death, and to us in our bereavement. No words can adequately express
the gratitude and kindly regard we feel, but we wish you to know that in our
hearts we shall always remember you. For such kindness as you have shown, God
alone may suitably give reward.
