THE ELDER REUNION
One object of this reunion was for the purpose of prepetuating the memory of
Rev. Wytche Elder, who came from Georgia to Alabama and settled a place two
miles north of Milltown in Chambers county more than eighty years ago. Soon
thereafter he organized New Hope Christian church within a half mile of
where he settled.
On Wednesday, the 29th day of July 1925, we met at the church, where, after
an able sermon by Rev. G.D. Hunt, we repaired to the old homestead, where
about two hundred of the relatives, with quite a number of neighbors and
friends, met around a table heavily laden with good things to eat. Some
would eat a little and talk a little while, some would try to eat and talk
at the same time. After eating, about an hour was given to all to talk and
they nearly all did, and at the same time. A business meeting was then
called and all necessary business attended to. After this we had some good
talks by different ones.
Some of the descendants of Rev. Wytche Elder were there from Birmingham,
Anniston, Heflin, Roanoke, Salem, Opelika and all the mill towns in the
vally in Alabama, and from Lumber City, Americus, Columbus, Griffin,
LaGrange and West Point in Georgia, from Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio,
Louisiana and Texas.
There were some who looked forward with great anticipation but were
prevented from attending on account of sickness. All the relatives are
protestant in their belief, not any believe in monkey evolution, but all
believe in development. Being at a reunion of this kind created within us a
greater desire to be prepared for that great and final reunion. R.W. Elder

OLDEST RESIDENCE IN ROANOKE IS TORN DOWN
Last week was torn down what was probably the oldest house in Roanoke, which
was last owned by Dr. W.H. Pool, and after his death by other members of his
family. The house was located on Louina street and was until last week
occupied by Mrs. W.H. Pool and her son Wyatt H. Pool and family. The history
of the residence is traced back beyond the Civil War. It is thought to have
been at least 80 years old or older. Yet it was in a good state of
preservation. Mr. Pool states that it required seven men working at the job
four and a half days to get it down and take it apart. The sills were hewn
out of heavy timber and were about 14 inches square. The framing was put
together in the old mortice style with wooden pins.

On May 6, 1905 the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Willingham was brightend by the

mother, 2 sisters, 3 brothers, a wife and two little children and a host of
relatives and friends to mourn his leaving. He was one of the most patient
sufferers that has ever been witnessed. He was ever ready to smile when
anyone went into his room. Rebus united with the Christian church at Haywood

body was laid to rest in the Haywood cemetery Wednesday, Aug. 5th. Funeral
